DS 14 always tired, body aching, headaches

Hi my eldest DS, 14, has always been quite sensitive to aches and pains, but now always seems to have a body ache, or headache, and be lethargic. He likes sports but struggles with muscle pain and sore legs. He has a reasonable teenage diet, Omega 3 and 6 and vitamin supplements. Have recently started iron (Floradix) too, which seems to have given him a bit more colour, but not much else different. He always seems lacking in vitality / energy and his posture is poor, shoulders hunched. I have suggested we see the GP but he refuses and I don't want to force him to go to (we went once before when he was younger when I was concerned about his tiredness etc. and thought he might be diabetic like his Dad (he wasn't), he found it really uncomfortable and embarassing).. any similar experience or advice?

You need to take him to the doctor.

Embarrassment is not a good enough reason IMO.

My first thought was Covid to be honest, but he definitely needs to get checked out

Take him to the GP. It will likely be similar in that they will run blood tests for nutrient deficiencies and also for glandular fever. Or he may be short on protein in his diet.

He is old enough to go into the appointment by himself. That might make it less embarrassing for him if you just waited in the waiting room.

Low b12?

TrailingLoellia · 09/10/2023 22:39

That’s what the blood tests are for. Most common result is low Vit D that causes those symptoms. But can’t guess, need to test.

Coeliac disease. Sounds like my teenager pre diagnosis

Lilacdressinggown · 09/10/2023 22:41

I was also going to say Coeliac disease. My daughter was very anaemic by the time she was diagnosed. No bowel symptoms but she has migraines, joint pains and severe fatigue.

Thanks everyone, good advice - I phoned GP and have appointment for him to have his blood taken. GP said vitamin deficiencies are hard to diagnose and symptoms could be phsychological.. didn't mention coeliac disease, is it picked up on standard blood tests, or would you have to request it specifically? Did you have to push for further tests to be done?
Thanks again :)

Vitamin deficiencies are not hard to diagnose. There are normal ranges for every single vitamin or mineral!
