Saturday jobs

Just interested - what does your 16 year old do for a Saturday job and how did they find it?

I grew up in touristy village where everybody knew everybody but don't know how to help DD in our small city.

He works in a shop - got the job as a friend worked there and put in a good word for him. Sorry, that’s probably not much help!

Lifeguard at local leisure centre - 5 hours a week regular shift plus bank shifts when he wants them. NPLQ qualification takes a week and costs about £300 but then pay is £11/hr which is not bad at 16.

GardenGnomic · 03/10/2023 18:42

I think friend of a friend still works pretty much everywhere!

My son had a paper round at 14, I just asked in the local paper shops until I found one that needed one. At 16 he got a job in the local greengrocers - he just walked up the local high street every week looking in the windows etc for staff wanted notices.

Plasmodesmata · 03/10/2023 18:44

Small town here, lots of shops and cafes have signs in the windows when they need staff.

FrangipaniBlue · 03/10/2023 19:14

Waiting tables in the pub/restaurant in or village.

He's only 15 and they originally said they don't take u16 but I knew they were desperate for staff so every time they posted on Facebook about it we messaged them.

I think they gave him a job in the end to get us to go away 😂

My ds was a lifeguard
My dd volunteered witha SN group from12. When she was 16 she started getting respite work, and the group emplyered her at weekends and school holidays.

Gloriousgardener11 · 03/10/2023 19:23

Cafe, retail shop, garden centre.

Gumbo · 03/10/2023 19:23

Mine works in the local National Trust cafe, and loves it. They pay well, too. All his friends work at Tesco, who always seem to be hiring...actually, most supermarkets will be hiring for seasonal staff around now, so that might be an option?

cocksstrideintheevening · 03/10/2023 22:12

Lifeguarding are the coveted jobs around here.

TheSmallAssassin · 03/10/2023 22:17

Get her to Google "part time jobs city name Indeed", that's where most of the jobs are advertised in our small city - now's a good time because lots of shops seem to be recruiting their seasonal staff.

sashagabadon · 03/10/2023 22:17

Waitrose employs 16 plus if you have a local one?

Diversion · 03/10/2023 22:20

Local car sales that may need someone to wash all of their vehicles. Our son set out to find a job at 15, was out most of the day and returned with this job. He now has his own company which is unrelated to car sales, but his drive, determination and work ethic served him very well.

SpiritedSneeze · 03/10/2023 22:43

She works in a smoothie and juice window attached to a cafe. I saw a job ad on our areas facebook page and she applied that day.
She helped her friend get a job in the other window (ice cream and crepes) by putting her name forward when the owner mentioned hiring another weekend worker.

Ohhelpicantthinkofaname · 04/10/2023 07:48

Dd15 works on the turn styles at the local football club. £25 for 2 hours work.

Mamofteenager · 04/10/2023 08:42

Mine dresses up as a Disney princess for children's parties/events. She enjoys it and I'm surprised at how well it pays. Quite tempted to see if they need an "evil queen/stepmother Grin

youhavenoidea123 · 04/10/2023 08:46

Shops that don't sell alcohol are often a bit easier to get a job. My DC worked in Next and WHS. They applied via the website.

There are lots of seasonal jobs in retail, so now maybe a good time to get some work experience.

With Next I think they applied for 50 jobs. Just kept applying for different shifts that fitted. So my advice would be to not give up.

Spendonsend · 04/10/2023 08:49

Cafes, refereeing, lifeguarding, mowing lawns, supermarkets seem to be the main things

bruffin · 04/10/2023 09:21

Lifeguarding is well worth the investment.
Ds used his qualification thriugh Alevels, Uni and when he was looking for his career job.
Dd used hers in Camp America, although she had to do US version as well, she got loads of offers from camps.
