Late puberty?

My 13yr DD is showing zero signs of puberty. She is the smallest in her year so I am not entirely surprised but thought there would be some indications by now. She is very slim and sporty with not a massive appetite- prefers to graze. I don’t want to cause her concern or worry her into thinking she’s abnormal but should I take her to the GP?

Don't think its considered late until closer to age 16

Stichintime · 29/09/2023 21:27

13 is not particularly late.

DustyLee123 · 29/09/2023 21:32

I don’t think they do anything until 16, but you could enquire if it would set your mind at rest.

I did think that at first but then compared to most of her year group it seems she is the only one. But Dad is a short arse!

If she is significantly underweight then her periods will be delayed, it may be that her nutritional requirements are not being met given she is sporty.

i guess for her height she’s not underweight but compared to most of her peers she is significantly shorter and slimmer but is all in proportion but for a 9 or 10 year old maybe not 13. She eats healthily, doesn’t avoid meals or not eat choc/sweets but she just hates large meals
or portions and prefers to graze. I feel like a 24hr buffet maker!!!

I saw the gp at 15 and 9 months and was sent away, up to 16 is normal. Her periods started at 16 and 2 months

nocoolnamesleft · 29/09/2023 21:43

Actually, if she is showing zero changes at all, that is late in a girl, and may be worth a trip to the GP.

Littleguggi · 29/09/2023 21:44

Do you know what her height and weight centiles are now compared to when she was a young child?

pandapoo · 29/09/2023 21:49

I’m going to sound really bad not remembering but I think she was always in the lowest centile as in she has always been the smallest - in nursery in primary school etc so I guess on reflection it isn’t all that unexpected but I wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing something underlying.

Any updates OP my DD is nearly 14
No periods yet

MaloneMeadow · 26/11/2023 16:45

OP and @Refbuckethat - just a bit of reassurance! My DD was somewhat of a ‘late bloomer’. She was always one of the shortest in her year but it only began to really concern me (+ her) when she got to 14. All of her friends had started periods, had boobs, big growth spurts etc whilst she was still only in the very early stages of puberty. They all looked like young women yet DD still looked like a child.

She finally started her period shortly before her 15th birthday - honestly in the 6 months after that she completely transformed. Massive growth spurt and a complete change in figure, she started to get more womanly curves, boobs etc. The previous summer even women’s size 6 clothing was too big yet a year later she needed an 8.

She continued to grow long after her friends had stopped and was still having growth spurts at 17. She’s now 19 and finally slowed down at a perfectly average 5’7. In her Y7 school photo she was in the bottom (shortest) row yet last year in her Sixth Form leavers photo she was in the top row with the tallest. Just goes to show they all mature at their own rate!
