Insurance for learning to drive on own car

Hi - I had a search to see if this had been covered but I may have missed it. My daughter turns 17 soon and will be getting my mum's car as her own (mum in her 80s and decided herself to stop driving!) Daughter will be having lessons but we'd like to be able to take her for practice sessions in her own car, and then when she passes it will need full insurance. I'm trying to work out the best way to do this - has anyone been through it? When I go to comparison websites and even Marmalade which I understand is specifically for young drivers, they ask if its provisional or full licence (seem to have to choose one or the other), but ideally I'd like something where we can initially insure as a learner then "upgrade" the insurance when she passes.

Don't get me started on the astronomical cost!

Thanks

Let you insure your own car and build up your own no claims bonus while learning.

Marmalade do this! We've just done the same for our DS. We had to go for the Black box insurance but apparently it transfers the policy when he passes. Maybe give them a phone tomorrow - they were really helpful when I spoke to them and then I just did the policy online. Oh, and you have to put you/partner as a named driver too - this lowers the price!

Adrian Flux provisional license learner cover in her name then when she passes change it. Once she passes she is no longer insured you have to ring to update she is a FLH even from the test centre after the test. It was about £350 for 12 months for my son. I instructed him and he passed in 5 months. No refund though so maybe paying monthly might be better.

Marmalade good too.

Echoing what PPs have said - DD just rang up and changed her insurance to a full license as soon as she passed. However I would highly suggest doing a practice search to see how much it is to insure as a fully licensed driver. We expected DD’s learner insurance to be more expensive as she hadn’t even passed yet, but when she rang up to change it after she passed she actually had to pay several hundred pounds as it was more expensive! Wish we’d known in advance.

DD has Marmalade black box insurance. She started her own car policy as a learner and there was no increase in premium once she passed her test. She just phoned
to let them know when she passed. Black box is a bit of a pita but it does lower the premium I guess

My dd has just started driving and is insured as a learner driver on what will be her car, cost just less than £300.
The cheapest quote for when she has passed is £7k 😱

How the heck can it not have been more when she passed? Everyone I know says it goes up loads once they pass😖

Sterling. Excellent as a learner and cheapest as new driver too.

That's how it's done. It's one price before they pass and then another price afterwards. It's a very different situation pootling around the streets with your Mammy before you have passed.

We had admiral and it was about £350 and then it was £1200 after she passed.

Dd only got her car and took out policy a few weeks before sitting her (first) test. Cost around £900 (which is expensive for learner insurance but cheap for when you first pass so we figured it was worth it). Unfortunately she didn’t pass first time, crashed the 2nd time (but that’s another story! 🙈) and passed 3rd time lucky! 😎 Very glad her premium isn’t changing atm, but her renewal next year is gonna be extortionate 😬

Marmalade do this. I needed to renew my dds learner insurance and was advised about marmalades policies that convert from learner insurance to full insurance when they pass. She passed her test the day after she took out the policy and they just switched it over.

It won’t necessarily be extortionate. Shop around. Marmalade offered to renew her insurance for £975 with a black box. Manages to find her a policy for £730 without one.

My nephew couldn't get a quote from marmalade. Not sure why just said we can't quite for your details 🤷🏻‍♀️I would go with them if u can though as can convert when passed their test.

He got learners insurance no bother with another company and it was only about £400.

The big problem now is he passed his test just 6 weeks after turning 17 and no one will insure him. Zero quotes returned on all comparison sites and others that aren't on there. He managed to get 2 companies to quote, one wanted £16k and the other £21k.

It's certainly a minefield!
Ours have been insured on our cars, I'm not bothered about them having their own policies - I know lots of folks want to because you build up the no claims history. Whatever way, its not cheap! But still so important to pass the test if they can - and of course getting an actual test is a feat in itself!
