My daughter has just turned 13. Recently she has been saying that she feel faint everytime she stands up and feels thirsty a lot even after drinking a lot of fluids. She has a good diet and is a healthy weight

im going to take her to the docs but has anyone else experienced this at all?

I'd be concerned about type 1 diabetes
Has she lost any weight? Does her breath smell sweet?

Can type one appear at anytime? I thought it was something you were born with?. She doesn’t seem to have lost weight, im not sure on her breath but I will investigate!. She seems quite lethargic at the mo also. She’s of slim build but defo in the healthy range

Yes, it usually develops in children and young teens but it can happen at any age.

I was going to say possibly type 1 diabetes. It’s quite prevalent in my family and they all developed it at different ages through childhood and young adulthood.

its good you’re taking her to the docs so at least they can rule it out.

She could be having postural hypothension ( low BP on standing)

rainydogday · 08/08/2023 23:34

Both mine went through a fainting stage as teenagers. Both very tall and skinny. Defo see a doctor to rule out anything worse. Mine are very sporty and drank lots of water, but didn't have enough salts. So we added a pinch of salt to cooking (don't usually use any) and some of those electrolytes tablets in water for sports. They also gave us information about postural hypotension and how to get up slowly, wiggle toes and fingers etc.

Could be an iron deficiency? Usually if people have low iron they get light headed if they stand up too fast

WanderingWitches · 09/08/2023 15:52

@TracyTracy424 How did you get on at the doctors?

Hi everyone, thanks so much for replying! All her bloods were fine so they not sure if it’s maybe linked to anxiety!

looking back I used to faint a lot when I was younger and my mum said she did too, my blood pressure is always on the lower end also (not dangerously low but always on that side) as was my mums

so just going to keep an eye on her

That's good news! So pleased it's nothing serious Flowers

Hi, we have had this for about four years with my DD, lots of tests, including mri, the consultant is now saying he just thinks it's her growing faster than her heart can pump blood around her body.
DD also suffers with anxiety though

curlyLJ · 11/08/2023 10:06

I have exactly the same issue with my 13yo DD. She keeps feeling like she's going to pass out. It's not just as she stands up, sometimes it's as we're out walking.

Blood tests showed low, but not out of range, iron (ferritin) and low folates. GP has put her on iron and folic acid tablets but so far it hasn't improved. Her blood pressure from sitting then standing was fine.

My DD is also very anxious about all sorts of stuff, so I do think there's a correlation somewhere. Interesting what someone said up thread about salts, I hadn't considered that. She does drink a decent amount of water, so not dehydrated, but possibly not enough salt. I don't think it's related to blood sugars.

Interesting what you also said about fainting as a teenager. Do you think it could be related to hormones?
It's so hard OP. Let me know how you get on.

I had this a lot as a teenager. Low iron was the cause. Not mad low but some people are more sensitive to iron in their blood. Even now if my iron is too low my bp drops. I take spatone every day.

Didiplanthis · 11/08/2023 10:21

My dd 13 is the same.. all bloods normal. Very sporty, very slim. Its not uncommon in teens especially slim growing ones.
