WagonWheel1234 · 02/08/2023 10:41

17-Year-Old DD is going to Boardmasters festival next week with three friends. Her first festival and first time camping. Advice please:
a) for her to stay safe and have fun
b) for me to not be over-anxious!
Thank you!

Thank you @Dartmoorcheffy. That's encouraging.

mamaduckbone · 10/08/2023 09:15

I had a brief 'it's all good' text at 1am so at least I know he's still got his phone.
That's reassuring to hear @Dartmoorcheffy, thanks!

FrenchandSaunders · 10/08/2023 09:26

Not a teen but my DD is there (22) ... you still worry even when they're older (particularly when she ended up in the first aid tent at Reading when she was 17 due to too much alcohol in the sun and not enough food/water). I had a text last night saying having the best time ... no signal so can't do whatsapp etc. Thanks for the info from PP about the vapes/spiking.

Strugglingtodomybest · 10/08/2023 09:26

My two went last year and they were fine, although so glad to get out of the sun when it was time to come home!

I dropped my youngest off there yesterday and am taking the oldest today, after he finishes work.

There's no phone reception because there are 1000s of teenagers all trying to use their phones at the same time.

I almost went as a volunteer a few years back, there are charities working there to look after anyone who is upset/too drunk/etc etc. My friend said the worse thing to happen to her was having a youngster puke on her 🤣 I think if that's the worst thing then that's probably a good thing, iyswim?

Had a bit more communication this morning - 4 hours sleep and silent disco was amazing! At least it's dry(ish) but not too hot this year. Hope everyone else's teens are having a good time too.

Upsizer · 11/08/2023 13:14

Mine has returned home with sunstroke. Apparently no shade or water stations yesterday and weren’t allowed to walk into Newquay so had to get £9 bus?? Said the medical tent was full of teenagers with sunstroke and loads were taking drugs.

Glad others are having a better time!

Hi all

My girl is at Boardies too for the first time with a bunch of friends.. I’m picking up them up
on Monday.. thought probably around 2ish might be lighter traffic.. would love any thoughts/advice on pick up ?

finding it quite worrying too there’s hardly any network service.. trying not to think about it too much..

Peony654 · 12/08/2023 07:16

Take as little as possible that she’d miss in terms of valuables. I think festivals are generally safe places, with nice people. Obviously don’t take anything offered by a stranger. I’ve been to many festivals since being a teenager and I’ve only ever had positive experiences

FrenchandSaunders · 12/08/2023 07:58

@Upsizer Hope she’s ok. Awful there’s no water stations or shade.

mamaduckbone · 12/08/2023 10:35

That's a shame @Upsizer. I hope she's ok.
We're getting the odd text at random times (1.45am today!) but he seemed able to string a sentence together so I'll take that as a win.

mamaduckbone · 14/08/2023 08:51

Well mine made it through and is on the bus home!

Sausagesandpeas · 14/08/2023 09:31

Picking up at 1pm. So glad it’s all over!!

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 14/08/2023 09:32

Yep, mine too @mamaduckbone. Think she is looking forward to a night in her own bed!!

mamaduckbone · 14/08/2023 12:48

Waiting with trepidation to see if he is still buzzing with excitement or absolutely vile when he gets back! (There is generally no in between with him)

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 14/08/2023 13:20

I hope it's the first one @mamaduckbone. DD is usually lovely but I'm anticipating that she's going to be pretty tired!!

WagonWheel1234 · 14/08/2023 13:43

Thanks for all your posts everyone...

DD phoned yesterday morning to say one of her friends had overdone things and they all decided to leave a day early. So she's now on the sofa nursing a terrible cold and sunburn. She's glad she went but also glad it's over!

Back in the early hours … everything covered in mud 😳

rainydogday · 14/08/2023 14:10

We had one text from DD the whole time! Picked up this morning at 8.30! Very tired and grumpy but they had a great time! Some had a bit of sun burn, they all
Have sore throats.....probably bloody covid! Argh! They will probably
Sleep for a week

mamaduckbone · 14/08/2023 14:20

@WagonWheel1234 glad to hear she's home in one piece! Lessons to be learnt for her friend - it's a shame if she overdid it too much to enjoy it.

Oh please not Covid!! We're going away at the weekend...

SingingWaffleDoggy · 14/08/2023 14:29

Loads of people came back from Boardmasters last year with Covid so I’ll keep my fingers crossed they’ve dodged it this year. I’m not sure about official figures but I live in the south west and I now loads of people who have had it in the past few weeks.
Glad they’ve all had a good time apart from the after effects!

Sausagesandpeas · 14/08/2023 16:05

Picked them up a couple of hours ago. Remarkably easy and not very busy. Had a ball and already planning next year!

mamaduckbone · 14/08/2023 17:23

Home, a bit damp and smelly but in good spirits! Croaky from a lot of shouting, but doesn't seem ill 🤞🏻🤞🏻

MidLifeCrisis007 · 16/08/2023 07:33

DS2 has come home from Boardies with covid.... just like his sister 2 years ago!

I just hope DH and I don't catch it this time.....

Madcats · 18/08/2023 22:43

Yep. DD is a bit vague about how many of her yr11's were down at Boardmasters but I think we are up to about a dozen out of 20+ who are now +ve.

I seem to know a fair few unrelated adults with it too (or are they just the ones who have LFT tests in the house)?
