Nice summer job for teen girl in London - any recommendations?

Hi there, DD is fifteen, and looking for a summer job in central London or Bromley. She has done volunteering in a charity shop, and is currently doing a very short stint selling ice creams in a theater.
She has just received her NI number, so should be ok to work officially. She is smart and has good social skills, and can work tills and take card payments. I don't really think she would thrive in a hot kitchen but a shop or kiosk would be good. Can any of you recommend any jobs your teens may have had, or maybe suggest anywhere she could start looking.
Open to any ideas - Thanks in advance 😊

A lot of places won’t take you until your 16, some 16 and finished y11 so she’s likely to be quite limited.

that said most independent pubs will take 15 year olds as waitresses or washer uppers. Some independent shops will take kids under 16, but very few chains.

dd2 15 has worked as a waitress and has just got a job on the turnstiles of the local football club.

At 15 I think you need to lower your/her expectations!
Who would 'thrive' in a hot kitchen?
She's young with no experience, why should she have a 'nice' little shop job when millions of people twice her age (and more!) just crack on with kitchen work etc

Encourage her to have a go, not put obstacles in her way!

MsPrism · 16/07/2023 16:53

Hmm thanks for that both -
DD has very limited experience in our home kitchen and would probably be a liability in a professional one. It’s not that I think she’s too good for it, it’s more that I can’t see her adding too much value!
it looks like the ice cream gig might be ongoing so hopefully we’ll be fine. Thanks all/both.

Op I’m afraid to say it is very very very unlikely she will get a job this summer. All will have gone and the ones remaining will go to uni student not 15 year old girls

Hateitissues · 16/07/2023 16:55

How was she working on the theatre before? Given she’s only just received her NI number?

Needmorelego · 16/07/2023 16:57

@Hateitissues you don’t need a NI number to work. You can work from age 13.

Beamur · 16/07/2023 16:57

At 15 your options are more limited.
Is she a good swimmer? Once you turn 16 you can qualify as a lifeguard. You pay for the training - many local authorities run the courses, but often offer employment afterwards. Decent pay and often lots of holiday time work to pick up.

In a local threatre - so she was off the books?

Needmorelego · 16/07/2023 17:00

@Hateitissues A part time job in a theatre at age 15 will be perfectly legit. I worked in a shop from 15. I got an official printed payslip (we were owned by a big company).

Lifeguard jobs are sought after, I'm in Bromley but they'll be sorted for this summer. It's a bit late tbh for this summer

RosesAndHellebores · 16/07/2023 17:07

DD did babysitting for neighbours and when one family had a new baby, fortunately just after exams, played with their toddler, did her bath, etc., read stories. 5pm to 7.30 (covering the misery hours). She got £20 a session but this was in about 2014.

We were a close knit community.

jackstini · 16/07/2023 17:11

Pot washing in a cafe maybe?
My niece did that age 15

Stickybackplasticbear · 16/07/2023 17:12

She might have left it a bit late. Also the commute from Bromley to Central London will take a bit off her low wage.

Perhaps something quite tourist based where they need extra capacity in the summer.

DS: cafe/bakery (from 15), NHS111 call centre (from 16), Santander call centre (17-18). All around school work.
DD1: Costa (from 16), local pub (from 18), various cafes and hotels, mostly as barista/bartender while at uni.
DD2: Local pub (from 16)

It's hard to get a job at 15, as a lot of employers won't consider you until you are 16. To be honest, DS was totally exploited by the place he worked for, and often left in sole charge, or cleaning/cashing up on his own.

You can work in a pub under 18, but obviously not serving alcohol, unless you are a waitress and it's part of a meal.

TerfIngOnTheBeach · 16/07/2023 17:28

DD worked in a local chippy at 15, it had a restaurant attached so she did everything from serving on the counter, to waitressing, to cleaning out the fish fridge. She got really good tips too. It wasn’t summer only though, she did it until she was 16 and it gave her the advantage over school leavers when she later applied to river island.

sometimes you have to work in a hot (greasy and smelly) kitchen to get that nice shop job 😉

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 16/07/2023 19:17

Unlikely in London as so many adults are here to work and kids are seen as safeguarding risk to employ.

Best Options include -

Babysitting- put up adverts locally and on local social media groups (make sure she is going to safe homes though perhaps go with her when she meets the family for first time).

Paper round if they still exist.

Cleaner/home help for elderly neighbors.

Tutor if she is good at maths for example she could help younger kids practise over the summer.
