Is your older teen working this summer? If so what?

I'm curious - most of the dc we know who have just finished sixth form are not working this summer and I cannot get my head around this.
I worked from 16 onwards every school and then university holiday.

They have about three months off before heading to university. The majority seem to be travelling for a few weeks with friends and going on a family holiday and pottering about in between. Is this the norm now? Note most of these kids are from comfortable middle class families - not staggeringly rich but well off enough.

Was talking to mums about this yesterday. It is nigh on IMPOSSIBLE to get paid jobs now. We have people calling in daily and we had to stop even putting cvs on file. Even the places always looking for staff aren’t anymore. Lots of people volunteering which is great in a way but I feel for them too. Op this is more the way now, people who would have done ft jobs are now accepting pt leaving teens stuck. That and businesses can’t afford extra staff anymore. Kids who have jobs are lucky

It obviously isn't because look at this thread

KingscoteStaff · 15/07/2023 07:31

Both mine sports coaching - they have learnt from their cousins to start filling their uni / travel coffers early!

Lentilweaver · 15/07/2023 07:32

DD got a paid research job at her uni. Was very lucky to get it. Tons of applicants.

DS is not travelling except on our family holiday to see family. Which we are funding because granny wants to see him.

Floofydawg · 15/07/2023 07:33

I have two SSs who both need rockets up their arses. 16 & 21, neither working this summer. 😡

lljkk · 15/07/2023 07:34

DS is a bit numpty. He put in an application to Iceland & Lidl. Walked into a local pizza joint. When they turned him down he shrugged & stopped trying.

His actual jobs he was recruited to plus one he applied for that he got an offer (chip shop). But mostly he just isn't very persistent & thinks email & websites are way to interface.

Locally (facebook) we have constant stream of ads for pub work, kitchen portering, other hospitality, paper rounds, leisure centre, cafe, retail, tourist-related jobs, cleaners...

orangeleavesinautumn · 15/07/2023 07:35

any youngsters who haven't found work, I suggest dropping your CV off through the letter box of all you local children's nurseries, labelled student looking for holiday work. Many nurseries are very short staffed, especially during holidays. It an a while to get you DBS check back, but once you are accepted as a bank worker you can return every university holiday for years

stayathomer · 15/07/2023 14:33

YukoandHiro
just this area then- even hospitals and care homes and local pubs are saying they’re not taking people/helpers. Local factory always have work and they put up a notice on their website that they might have work come Christmas

I think DS has relied too much on email and should be out pounding pavements, myself. But I don't want to interfere too much this year. Hopefully, he has learnt his lesson.

DD 17 works in Waitrose since she finished her GCSE’s last summer. Earns £11 ph. Happy there, has enjoyed meeting slightly older people and is much more independent.

Eh ?
My dd was made redundant from her job (waitressing) last week, and had another one within 3 days (she was away for 2 of them, so on the first day of tying). As lljlk said a couple of posts before this, there are constant adverts for people to work in waitressing, hospitality generally, care, cleaning, retail. Not just round here, but I get ads into my Facebook feed all the time. They are certainly round where I live (big City) and where dd is at University (much smaller town, not a holiday area), and where I have recently been on holiday (quiet beach area).

Mine all worked as lifeguards during the Summer after their A-levels (and GCSEs and the one inbetween). They managed this alongside the odd week off for holidays. But they've also had several other jobs between them, during 6th form and as students.

Patchworksack · 15/07/2023 16:42

16 yr old - zero hours contract as a lifeguard but is picking up plenty of shifts. He seems happy to do the 6am starts which are unpopular!

Probablysane · 15/07/2023 16:51

my teens are all doing bar work - they are 18 and over though (2 at uni and 1 just done A levels). Last summer the youngest (who was 17 then) did lots of babysitting and cat sitting and earned a fair amount - she put an ad on Next Door but also did lots for the parents at her old primary school. They have all worked since they were 16. My 15 yo son isn't working this summer but this will probably be the last one - after GCSEs I would hope he works.

My eldest, who now has a full time job, used to work at Wetherspoons!

londonmummy1966 · 15/07/2023 17:08

Elder one is only doing a bit of music teaching/practice supervision and babysitting but not much else as want practice time in order to get ahead on repertoire for next year. They can earn up to £40 an hour for the teaching so better to do less work but more highly paid imo. Younger one has been doing a mix of NHS reception work and after school childcare - seems now to be flexing the latter to holiday care which pays up to £15 an hour - not bad for a 19 year old. NHS work was offered on the back of doing a lot of volunteering in a vaccine centre post GCSEs.

coxesorangepippin · 15/07/2023 17:12

They should temp.

Go to an agency, they'll be working Monday morning. Tons of jobs that way

GertrudeJekyllRose · 15/07/2023 17:23

My 18 year old is working as a Barista at a posh independent coffee shop this summer. It becomes a wine bar/cocktail bar in the evenings so she can pick up extra bar tender duties as well.

Delphigirl · 15/07/2023 17:30

Mine is just finished lower sixth, 17, working as a chef in a farm shop cafe kitchen

19yo working in a grand country house hotel as a barista/wine waiter before going to uni in September

Delphigirl · 15/07/2023 17:31

Oh sorry / 17yo at 11.50ph, 19yo £15 per hour and 1.5x that if he works over 40hrs a week. Plus tips.

Ohhelpicantthinkofaname · 15/07/2023 18:06

Dd1 18 has a zero hour contract at a nursing home where she’s worked for around a year. She’s picking up as many shifts as she can mostly covering annual leave.

dd2 15 is working at the local football club on the turnstiles.

dd1 has a holiday booked with her boyfriend and they’re both coming away with us

changer121 · 15/07/2023 18:10

Dd 17 is in year 12.

She's doing work experience for a few days.
Working extra hours in her part time job
Holiday with extended family
Holiday with friends
Spending time with friends
Theatre trips with family
Revision as she has exams when she goes back in September!

Ponderingwindow · 15/07/2023 18:15

My 14yo is working as a volunteer this summer.

thaegumathteth · 15/07/2023 19:41

Ds is 16 so goes into final year of school after the holidays. He's working 12 hours a week

thelionthewitchtheaudacityofTHISbitch · 15/07/2023 20:19

My 17 year old started at 15 with occasional work helping a local mechanic. My DC is pretty handy and there was plenty of work. Once they started their college course in a similar field they applied for and got a 2 day per week work with a local car dealership. They are doing so well but their commitment to this industry would be seen by everyone they work with. They are lucky in that they will not incur the uni fees, and also they are lucky in that neither their dad (my ex) nor I need to be asking for food & board contributions. Yet. Their passion for this industry is noted by everyone they work with. So I recommend that - if your DC are good in a field and passionate about it - that goes a long way.

PatMu · 15/07/2023 20:43

My 17 yr old has 2 jobs; 3 days working in a construction site office and weekends in a supermarket. She loves the supermarket and hopes to keep that one on when she returns to school. My ExH got her work experience in the construction site last year and they looked for her to go back in summer- she's saving for a car.

My 15 year old helps out on a farm- not formal jobs more of an interest for him and usually gets some cash for his help. He's too young to get proper paid work but will next summer.

orangeleavesinautumn · 15/07/2023 21:29

There are so many jobs around now, it is almost impossible not to find work.

friend's young son with learning difficulties finished school on the Friday, started job hunting on Saturday, found a job the same day, took Sunday off and started work on Monday. He can hardly read, and traditionally there has been fierce competition between non-readers for jobs that don't require reading - more competition than for university places! due to so much fewer places than applicants.

Not now though. NO problem at all, even for non readers

Animallover2325 · 16/07/2023 02:04

I wish he would get out his bed early enough to go find work!!
