Periods and DD...

DD has had periods for four years or so. From the beginning she has always felt so ill with them. Cramps, feels sick, comes over all hot and sweaty. Her mood becomes low. We try to control with neurofen/paracetamol at regular intervals. They are also irregular and getting a bit heavier. Originally I thought they'd improve as time went on.

Have been to GP twice. The first time they put her on the pill. Her periods were better but she became so low in herself, didn't want to get out of bed, she was almost depressed. It also caused weight gain Decided to stop after six months due to how low she was. Her mood has returned to normal since stopping but she hasn't lost the weight she gained. Whilst on the pill her periods were more manageable but she still had some cramps/sickness.

We then went back as periods still irregular, they did some blood tests and a scan. Got a text to say all ok.

Six months down the line and every period is miserable for her. She has to miss school and because they are quite irregular (think this cycle was 36 days) it can be hard to predict when they'll arrive. But when they do she struggles to do anything as she feels so bad.

So we need to go back to the doctor. She is really worried that she'll get her period whilst we're on holiday and it will ruin it as she'll feel so ill. I sadly haven't found the gp's sympathetic. The last one we saw was very dismissive. She wants to get norethisterone but I don't know if they'll give it to her as she won't be able to predict when her next period is due very accurately.

Sorry this was long, does anyone have any advice? Or even what to ask the gp for. She's currently lying in bed again, hot and feeling sick with cramps.

Bumping for you, bless her heart. That GP sounds useless, why do they just put every female on the pill! Definitely see a different doctor

How old is she? Do you think she has got Endo?

timetochangethename · 12/06/2023 21:54

She's 17.

Last time I just felt the gp was so uninterested. I'm just not convinced that putting her on the pill is the right way to go, she doesn't need it for contraception. I would rather find out why her periods are so bad.

She cried earlier today and said it felt like someone was ripping her stomach out.

An update, saw another gp today and they prescribed her mefenamic acid to try for a few months but wouldn't prescribe the norethisterone as I expected. I'm slightly concerned that it's not going to be that effective and it'll ruin a few days of our holiday.

I used to get such bad cramps I would pass out but I found if I had bananas the week before it would make it better, just a suggestion, might not be any use. Your poor dd. I've had many experiences of being fobbed off by doctors for this stuff and it's very defeating. Someone here suggested always asking for a doctor with an interest in woman's health and that's what I'm doing next time. Hope the latest medication helps her.

I think mefenamic acid is good, it's a strong pain killer but also is meant to try and stop the heavy bleeding. I know she can only take it when she starts bleeding and not before. I hope it helps her though! Have they thought of maybe doing an ultrasound to see if her ovaries are okay or anything?

Push for a referral please!!!

I've suffered like this for years & years and I'm finally being referred to gynaecology.
It's horrible to suffer and be fobbed off with pills, coils etc.
Also I'm now very worried my fertility could be compromised as endo can cause issues.

my DD is like this and has been for 3 years. Shes only 14 though.
Shes now been taking the pill for about 8 months and its really helped her. She was also prescribed Mefenenic acid initially but it didnt really help.
Her periods are still heavy and painful but she is more in control and we can plan better. When we go away in 4 weeks time she will just not have the pill free week so she wont get her period.

My DD 16 sounds very similar. Last year her cramps and PMT really affected her mood, she had time off school and her concentration and schoolwork really suffered. When we went on holiday for a fortnight she had a great time for 5 days and then literally didn’t get out of bed for the rest of the holiday. GP prescribed mefanamic acid, I was sceptical initially, but after a few months of experimenting of the best time to start and how long to take it for it helped hugely and now twelve months on she very rarely takes anything. Her mood has improved significantly: it must be so debilitating anticipating the misery every few weeks. She used to take gaviscon with it and sometimes omeprazole because it gave her heartburn, and paracetamol also if she needed.

Could she try evening primrose oil? And Vit D. Also avoid sugary food as poor blood glucose regulation is linked to worse symptoms. At least while you wait to see the GP?
