Just curious to know if any of your teens have a job like a Saturday job/ part time work?

I had a Saturday job and before that a paper round!m from age 13 and looking back it did me the world of good, just getting basic work experience and of course I loved the cash. But I never hear of teens doing any work now. Is it just the people I know or have things changed?

Hi, it's pretty common here (small seaside town) for 16+ kids to have a job. Less so for under 16s but still happens.
My eldest DD, 16, has had a job in a cafe since she was 15. She's got more money in her bank than I have!
DD2, 14, volunteers in a charity bookshop on Saturdays. She's hoping to get a job in a bookshop once she's 16.

My 15yr old has a paid job as a gymnastics coach/helper for a local club for children. She also attends her own sessions. She volunteered in the role for about a year and has just started to be paid for half her hours and volunteers the other half.

Before that, from approx age 13, she was delivering leaflets for cash.

My older teens started working at 15/16. One in a local convenience store then a restaurant. She now works for an after school childcare company whilst in college.
The other started work in a cafe and also walked our friends dog. She then also got a job for an after school childcare provider (different one)

Both my teens work, most of their friends do too.

Do you have teens OP?

No my eldest is 11, but most of my good friends children are 11 or older, mostly in their teens and none of them have had jobs!

Good to hear that the options are still out there as I would like to encourage my children to work/ volunteer when they can.

Ah I just wondered as I think if you aren't in that stage of life yet, you don't really have the pool of people to compare too.

As I said mine work and most friends do. There's the odd one with rich parents who don't but I think they learn much more that just how to earn a few quid. It's been great for both of them.

My 15 yo got a job cleaning a small air BnB in nice a week and now does babysitting for the family.

My 14 yo is desperate for a job but nothing really available although we do live quite rurally so slim pickings!

Once a week....

Yes, I agree there's a lot more to it than the money.

I had my kids later in life, so most of my peers have older kids. None of them rich. I have never thought to ask them why none of their kids don't have a job. I will now though.

Employers insurance and regulations around U16s means very few will take o thus age group these days.

Summertimesmile · 19/05/2023 22:12

Yes mine is a sports coach on a Saturday. Eldest worked in an estate agent on a Saturday and was a football coach and worked in a pub

CrispsnDips · 19/05/2023 22:12

My 18 year old stacks shelves in Asda
My 17 year old works in a Farm Tea Shop

mondaytosunday · 19/05/2023 22:20

My son got a job in the kitchen of a cafe at 16. A friend's daughter works at a stables. Another at a pub, one at a B&B during breakfast service.,Most other teens I know work at cafés, those doing gap years (so 18) work at supermarkets for flexibility.
I don't know any 17 year olds NOT getting a job. My daughter just turned 18 and I'm hoping she might, but she's just been diagnosed with MS and starting treatment after A levels so we'll see how that goes.
Saturday only jobs do seem scarce though - other than the stable job they want more commitment.

My DD wanted to work before she was 16 but we found it impossible, nowhere was willing to employ her at that age. As soon as she turned 16 she started working in McDonald’s, then at 17 got a job as a hair salon assistant, and now a year later she works as a receptionist in a trampoline park and absolutely loves it.

Do you know if that includes voluntary work?

It's very difficult to get a job under 16, including volunteering, nowadays unless you have a connection Volunteering with Scouts/Guides is possible. The typical charity shop volunteer is already difficult to get into.

DD is waiting for an ASD/ADHD assessment, at the moment she need the weekends to recover from stress at school. We see again come September when she starts 6th form and hopefully has a diagnosis and can look forward.
She volunteers with the Beaver Scouts though.

We also have two colleges locally and lots of jobs are taken by their students as they have more time than a school/6th form pupil.
