Vaping

We've caught our 15y DS with a vape twice both 20mg strengths so high in nicotine, the first time we caught him was in December, he says he hasn't bought another one up until this week but sometimes uses a mates. We've spoken to him and he says he has it because it helps him feel calm, however i think its more to do with peer pressure then anything else, when I pick his sisters up from school I see the majority of his friends vaping in the nearby park. We're considering letting him have a nicotine free vape if he's going to do it anyway, we'd rather he had a nicotine free one from a proper website rather then a dodgy one from one of those little shops they've been buying them from. I've told him if he wants to continue then he needs to do some research into vapes and make an informed decision, he's come back to me with some knowledge so he has actually done the research, I was hoping it would have put him off but apparently not. Are we mad to even consider letting him have a nicotine free one? I don't think it's something he would do often and it would be more for show in front of his mates i think, he doesn't hang out after school or on weekends really besides the occasional visit to the gym, he's more of a gamer so I know he wouldn't be out constantly puffing on it and he wouldn't be allowed to use it at home. Part of me knows it's a stupid idea and we obviously don't want him to vape at all but part of me also knows he'll just go buy one high in nicotine behind our backs if not. We're hoping its just one of those fads and he'll eventually drop it, especially if hes not getting addicted to the nicotine. What would you do?

I really do sympathise, they are so addictive, and I think your approach is an excellent idea.

From my observations and from what I have been told by a very senior teacher at my DS’s school (classed as an excellent school in our county), is that vaping has very rapidly become a huge problem for them, starting in YR7.

I think the government needs to seriously crack down on it. Shops selling ‘pretty’ looking ‘bumble gum’ flavour etc., is frankly an outrage.

Good luck 💐

I agree with pp.

It is a huge problem in schools. They all think its cool with the flavours and bright colours. Having same issues with my dd.

I wish they had never been invented.

This is exactly what we did with DS when he was 15. I told him if he was going to do it anyway and wanst addicted as he claimed he wasn't he could have nicotine free ones rather than ones from his dodgy mates. He is 16 now and doesn't vape anymore.

Thank you for your replies, I've been worried we've made an awful mistake but you've all eased my mind a little.

I do agree, I really wish they hadn't been invented, I understand that they help people to quit smoking but they're obviously marketed at the younger generation with the fancy flavourings and bright colours and styles, it was rediculous really that they was ever invented. If they would even just regulate them better and clamp down on the sales to children. Alot of the shops around here that are selling them to kids are those small little shops that also sell dodgy cigarettes so I dread to think whats in some of these vapes kids are getting hold of. I'll be reporting the shop he's purchased his vapes from to trading standards. I couldn't even find an ingredients list or an legitimate website that sells the brand he had bought.

Are you seriously using a parenting thread about concern over vapes to promote vaping to underage people?
