Hi , which type of alcohol do your 16 year old girls take up parties . I appreciate they’ll probably hit the hard stuff but I don’t want to encourage it aa the parent will be there Any recommendations please ?

2-3 cans of dark fruits cider when nearly 17. No idea what was drunk when there but only once came home noticably pissed at 17.

You will get such a wide range of answers, it is one for your gut feeling about your child and how they responded to talks about alcohol and if they are likely to get carried away or can be a bit responsible, and what the supervision going to be like.

Needmorelego · 09/04/2023 15:32

Why would you encourage under age drinking?
What's the point?
So your 16 year old can get drunk?
Why would they want to be drunk?

jackstini · 09/04/2023 16:22

When 16 she did cider or canned cocktails
Now she's 17 a lot of them take vodka and lemonade

I would consider:
What is she used to and what have you seen her drink before?

I will probably be the first of many to point out:
It's not underage drinking
The legal age for drinking in a house is 5 (which is ridiculous I admit, but the law)
The legal age for drinking with a meal in a restaurant with other adults is 16 - so she could legally drink there anyway

GingerPigz · 09/04/2023 16:26

Sourz... Just like us, they are going to drink whether we provide it for them or not. I'd rather control it with a single bottle of something relatively weak than them scrounge a bit of everything/whatever they can get their hands on.

Needmorelego · 09/04/2023 16:26

Yes technically a child can drink in the privacy of their own home at age 5 but my point still stands.
Why encourage drinking alcohol at 16?
What the point?
There isn't one.
Also if 16 why not 14, why not 10?

SpiritedSneeze · 09/04/2023 16:35

At 16 she took a couple of canned cocktails, or 4 little bottles of smirnoff ice or 4 cans of hooch.

At 17 she took the smallest bottle of smirnoff vodka half full and a big bottle of lemonade. Or she would pre mix flavoured vodka lemonade in a big bottle and take that.

This thread is depressing.
Why do teens feel the need to drink so much alcohol?

theres some 5% alcohol wines I used to get when I was a teen (like a fruit juice / wine mix), or Smirnoff ice

Because it is undeniable fun

MissMarplesbag · 09/04/2023 17:11

I'd be ensuring that your dd has adequate contraception as well if you're going to encourage her to drink. The two go together unless you want to end up being a young granny.

That's a shame cause you were being soooo helpful.

StylishM · 09/04/2023 17:32

I was always given 4 Smirnoff ice/WKD. Cider can be quite strong, whereas alcopops are usually 4%ish

What age are your kids?

Are you fine with them drinking at 18 and just concerned about the under age part?

Dyslexicwonder · 09/04/2023 18:02

Dd is 16 (doing GCSEs this summer) a wise older mum suggested canned alcopops/ cocktails and plenty to eat to mop it up.Sourz is only for special occasions like NYE. I caution both my DC (19&16) against spirits.

Dyerun · 09/04/2023 18:09

DD at 16 was mostly alcopops, WKD etc or fruit cider. DS doesn't get on with beer or cider so been spirits if anything.

Both adults now and sensible drinkers...much more sensible than me anyway...

Needmorelego · 09/04/2023 18:56

@NoTouch ha ha 🤣
I've been in a weird mood this weekend - not sure why? But that's why I have been disagreeing with a lot of threads.
I need a nice thread of "name that book/film/toy". I'm good at those.
Mumsnet itself has been weird too - like a million threads about people not being given enough food at meals out - is that what happens on the one day the supermarkets are shut 🤣.
I'll hopefully be less cranky tomorrow 🙂
@EarthlyNightshade one child. Almost 15. I don't know if she will be interested in alcohol at 18. I don't drink, my husband has the odd can of cider once in a while. It's not something that comes into her life much.

Indiana2021 · 09/04/2023 19:01

needmorelego
It'll come into her life if her friends and peer group start to drink at parties. It doesn't really matter what happens at home. The pull of her peers will be more of an influence.

Needmorelego · 09/04/2023 19:07

@Indiana2021 she is autistic so her peer group is slightly different.
I doubt she will be going to parties unless it involves playing computer games and eating crisps 🤣

Why bother getting involved in a post that is unlikely to impact you then if your only contribution is to chastise other parents for their choices.

Can you remember being young ?

Needmorelego · 09/04/2023 20:14

@userxx yes I remember being young. Didn't like alcohol then. Don't like it now. 🤣

Needmorelego · 09/04/2023 20:22

@userxx to add...I have drunk alcohol in the past - because I thought I was 'supposed' to, peer pressure, to fit in etc.
I never enjoyed it, have never seen the point in drinking booze and I just really don't see the point of encouraging 16 year olds to drink alcohol.
But yeah....if other parents are fine with it for their children then that's their choice and you are right - not really anything to do with me.
Anyway.... enjoy what's left of Easter 🙂

gtmumof3 · 09/04/2023 20:57

2 of my 3 are in their teenage partying years. I don't encourage excessive drinking and never will. At 16 I usually send them with dark fruits, wkd or Smirnoff ice. However, low and behold, 9/10 times they come home slightly pissed. Other people, bring spirits and other such strong drinks. I tend to worry more about them being safe and knowing where they are.
