Am I wrong to think it's odd for my sister & her partner are planning on taking her 15 yr old daughter for a surprise Thai massage for her birthday. She is a normal 15yr old who plays in after school hockey team but has no health issues/aches & pains. My sister was really annoyed when I pulled a face

Why are you passing judgment? Sounds like a nice idea to me.

My mum took me for occassional massages when I was 16. It was nice.

Sounds weird to me. Why a 'Thai' massage? It's usually men who have them.

Really? Have you never heard of Swedish massage or deep tissue? It’s just a type of massage technique. Clearly a bit xenophobic and ignorant if you think it’s about sex for men.

Shoelacesundone · 29/03/2023 19:57

Lol. No it isn't usually men who have Thai massages. It's a massage style just like Swedish or Indian.

Check your prejudices.

LBFseBrom · 30/03/2023 02:33

Please excuse my ignorance, I was only going on what I had been told in the past. I have googled and see it is a mixture of gentle pressure, ayurvedic massage and a type of yoga.

It's rude to spring on any person an intimate activity that requires nudity or others touching them. Even if the daughter has had or likes massages it's not right to surprise her with it. It should be an activity she chooses for herself as sometimes people go along with things but they don't really want to.

Pocodaku · 30/03/2023 03:15

I don’t think the massage gift is odd. But I would be concerned about whether the masseuse is qualified in Thai massage. I know 3 people who were injured by painful massages which were pitched as Thai (though to be fair, this wasn’t in the UK).

Thai massage is probably the most "dressed" massage you could have. You can even leave everything on if you want. Maybe because we are closer to Thailand here in Aus, but Thai massage is very common and my daughter and I have been going as a treat since she was 15. Now though, at 18, she goes with her mates 😔

Huh? It's a specific type of massage, you know by the people of Thailand Hmm What a ignorant comment

Weird thread

OverHereTryingToFigureItOut · 30/03/2023 04:05

Sounds great to me. DH and I both have them and DS had a "light" one at a festival, age 6.

DivorcingEU · 30/03/2023 05:03

You're clothed for this massage so out of all the massages that exist, this is probably the least odd, if you find it odd.
