Is there special sanitary protection for teens?

My DD is 11 and we've recently been taking about periods etc. It was decided that I should get her some sanitary protection to put in her bedroom and maybe carry one in her bag. Is there a company that make a range just for slight teens? Or where can I get samples /further info for her? Or can you recommend a suitable brand for a young teen?
Thanks

Always Ultra Mini are good.

Wotz · 08/02/2008 22:14

I got these for my 11 year old, she has started per periods, but they are only light and infrequent.

Always Ultra Boots were selling a special pack with a little pretty tin case to cary one or two in.

Their not suppose to start with tampons are they? It's just she's so slightly built I can't imagine a grown sized towel being particually nice especially when first periods are light. Just wondering

notjustmom - 11 year olds might find tampon insertion a little difficult.

I have to admit - i used tampons from the off and i've bought DD1 some too - along with an assortment of other sanitary goods. I told her to unwrap and give them all ago. - may even get her a mooncup. (she's 11 not started yet.

Wotz · 08/02/2008 22:23

Its a tricky thing with 11 year olds, you explain it all and still wonder if they'll come out of the bathroom with the tampon stuffed up their nose or something!

Easier to explain that they can leave it a sanitary towel in their knickers.

just check out the supermarket, there are various brands marketed for the young. My advice would be to buy a selection, stock up the bathroom and her bedroom and let her chooose what she likes best eventually without any hurry or pressure.

11 yr olds can usually rEAD WELL ENOUGH TO GET THE INSTRUCTIONS THOUGH - AND THERE ARE PLENTY OF BOOKS EXPLAINING - I KNOW - I'VE GOT THEM ALL FOR dd AS SHE GETS TOO EMBARRASED TALKING TO ME - CAN'T THINK WHY?

Go on some of the products websites, some offer free samples (bodyform are at the mo)

Good way of getting to try before you buy

My girls like always purple pack and bodyform green pack (not sure of the 'real' names) All are petite and started under 12

babalon · 08/02/2008 22:32

PMSL at tampon up nose.

I'm a mooncup fan but figured start simple

Those ultra ones look pretty good, I can only remeber being given a pink huge holder for tampons at school even though we were told that we shouldn't use tampons? Was hoping things had moved on?

Just out of intrest notjustmum has got me thinking now. How many of you introduced tampons straight away? if so lilets or applicator?

can you still get the Nana range? Anything in a individually wrapped bag would be good, for hygiene as much as anything else.

I remember being 11 and really interested in my sister's sanitary belt, luckily by the time I started, stick-on pads had been invented .

I've actually been surfing the net for the last 10 minutes desperatly trying to find you the link to the kit i was sent. It had a book all about periods and a load of different shaped and sized towels .

Oh and i have just read that tampons shouldn't really be used by children under the age of 14 because of the risk of TSS!

bookwormmum · 08/02/2008 22:36

I used tampons when I was about 15 and didn't have problems. Lil-lets were easier than messing around with 'applicators' though.

bookwormmum · 08/02/2008 22:37

I did used to hate seeing applicators floating in the school loos .

My DD 13 uses Ultra Teen was are slimmer but just as absorbent. Can only seem to buy them though from larger Boots. Dr told me the same about tampons, need to have their periods for at least a year as need a heavier flow to use them.
