Is this normal?

I have a teen boy age 13 and his room smells terrible. He has good personal hygiene and his room is kept clean and relatively tidy but as soon as he is in there he just farts constantly to the point where I can't go into the room because of the smell. If he opens the door the smell escapes to the hallway Envy Is this normal? He doesn't fart constantly out with his room and he doesn't suffer from stomach problems. We kept a food diary and also tried cutting out certain foods to see if there was a pattern but can't find any causes. I don't know if this is an actual problem or if it's a normal hormonal boy thing? He doesn't want me to book a doctors appointment so thought I would ask on here before I take any next steps

I'd say it was normal - but he should open his window occasionally!

What you don't want is for him to start trying to hide the smell with equally obnoxious, cheap scented aftershaves etc.

Teen boys do have a certain smell it's quite normal! No need for doctors 😬 you'll just make him even more self conscious. It's about this time they discover lynx 🤣

Ha ha yes, totally normal sorry! 😷

girlmom21 · 03/01/2023 11:39

Yeah teenage boys bedrooms stink, even if the teenager themselves doesn't.

Twen boys have a smell. Itvis not fart though.
My research ( two sons) leads me to believe thatvthe smell is testosterone. It absolutely honks.
Mine would be clean, with clean sheets, an empty laundry basket etc and the room would still honk.
It fets better as they age but yeah. Open windows etc
I used a plug in air freshener at one point.

Teen not tween sorry

Very reassuring! Thanks for all the replies. It's definitely a wind issue as opposed to body odour, he hasn't hit the BO stage yet (what a lovely mix of aromas that will be!) but I did suspect it could be a puberty thing. Will make sure the window is opened religiously each morning and invest in some plug ins 🤣 thanks again

This thread has made me laugh! My 13yo could end a war with his farts. I think it's completely normal!

Just last week we noticed that DS14's room was howling!

We went through everything, and there was nothing rotting anywhere.

His duvet & pillows however were rancid!!! Bedding is changed regularly. He now has new pillows and duvet, and although it still smells like 'teenage boy' in his room, it's much better.

It is normal. Teenage boys smell horrendous - particularly to their mothers.

Someone once told me that this was biological and they were designed to repulse their mothers, so that you never fancied them and it cut the risk of incest in prehistoric times - but I suspect that is urban myth.

IneedanewTV · 03/01/2023 13:27

This thread has made me realise that the awful smell coming out of my now 20 and 18 year old rooms has gone. I always thought it was testosterone as it was repulsive and would make me gag. We have gone through the Lynx stage too. Onwards and upwards. Still get the farting though although I’m menopausal and can now compete with them on that skill.
