Hi
My dd14 has watched so much social media and is now using all sorts it creams and serums on her skin. I swear it's making her skin worse but and happy to be told otherwise.
What is a normal skin care routine for a 14 year old with some acne?
Thanks

How bad is the acne? I'd be tempted to send the GP if it's bad. I wish I'd taken my DS earlier as he has some scarring.

We did get something from GP but I made her face very red, puffy and sore.

gentle cleanser at PH 5.5. Cerave is v good

hyaluronic acid serum. Hada labo is a good one

gel type moisturiser

topical px treatment for acne @ night. Differin is good. Benzoyl peroxide products are good too. However, you have to build up to using them otherwise you end up with sore skin. Once every 3 nights. Then every other night until you build tolerance.

if above topical doesn’t work then you may have to look at dianette or Yasmin combined pill.

acne can be treated and like PP can leave scars for life if not.

Casandra Bankson is good to follow on YouTube - she had acne and isn't about expensive products

I'd go back to the GP.

I was the exact same!
She only needs a cleanser and moisturiser really but if she wants to get into serums just use niacinamide. I had very similar skin at her age, I’m 24 now and a skincare savant😂

Cerave is the god of cleansers and moisturisers! Super simple, not too many ingredients but works amazingly. Always double cleanse, start with clean hands, use warm/hot water and a clean flannel every time. Do not touch makeup wipes, micellar water or cotton pads. Make sure she is aware of what she touches whilst she is cleaning her face. Eg if she finishes cleansing then goes on her phone, she’ll need to wash her hands again before applying products as she’ll just be putting bacteria on her face.

follow these steps:

  1. wash hands with anti bac soap
  2. wet face with warm-hot water
  3. lather cerave salicylic acid smoothing cleanser
  4. let cleanser sit for about 20 seconds
  5. wipe off with a CLEAN hot flannel - must be a new one every time. I recommend cutting up a towel instead of buying loads of flannels; up to you
  6. cleanse again with either the salicylic acid cleanser or the hydrating cerave cleanser depending on how her skin feels. If it’s extra spotty/oily, use the salicylic. If it’s not so bad, use the hydrating.
  7. Wash off again using the same flannel then put the flannel in the wash.
  8. do not dry face
  9. apply niacinamide serum while face is still damp. I use the one by the brand ‘7DAYS’ - it’s on Amazon, (mint green coloured bottle) put one drop on forehead and one on each cheek.
  10. once dry, follow up with cerave’s salicylic acid moisturiser. (Light blue lid)

the niacinamide isn’t overly necessary but it made a difference for me and it’ll make her feel better to be using one of the ‘trendy’ products with a fancy chemical name haha!

If things are really bad with the acne, I’d recommend looking into a product called tretinoin. I have started using this recently for fine lines and it’s another step up but it’s also prescribed for acne. It is a harsh product though so do your research - watch Tik toks. Will take 12 weeks to see results after a few ‘purge’ months and dryness/irritation.
