What car for a 17 year old

Hi everyone, just starting to look at cars with my 17 old DD. Naively thinking you could pick up a decent car for around 2k, but looks like the budget will have to be stretched a bit further than this.

What sort of cars has anyone else's teen ended up with for a budget of around 4k or maybe a bit less. Or do we need to go higher to get anything decent?

DD had our old Fiat 500 when she passed her test, when she chose her first car after that she went for another Fiat 500. We had the first one for 10 years from when they first came out and spend virtually nothing on it, very reliable. Low insurance and economical too.

Mine had to share my car, fortunately it was cheap to insure.Teenager insurance shoots up when they pass their test so your first priority should be insurance costs. Look at telematics (black box) insurance too.

We brought dd1 a 16 year old C1 as they were looking to be the cheapest to insure, slightly less than the 107 or aygo, which are essentially the same car. It cost just under £800, but it was a stressful process finding one worth having for that price as they do the second they’re listed.

she’s put 5k miles on it since she’s had it, driving it on some long journeys, and it’s just passed it’s MOT with no advisory’s. It’s a great little car

i have an i10 which I love and is probably a bit nippier than the C1, but probably has a few more niggly issues despite being 6 years newer with half the miles on it 🤷‍♀️.

Some great suggestions on here! Just had another thought though - it needs to have a decent boot size coz I will need to cart him and his stuff off to uni next year (I will have the car here during term time - he won’t need it at Uni)….

DS has a 10 year old, but very low mileage, Fiat Panda.

He was embarrassed at it at first (I love his friends, but some of their cars are nicer than mine!) but it's a cracking little car and he bloody lives it now

flotsomandjetsome · 30/03/2023 20:45

Loves it now* 🤦🏻‍♀️

Dd 18 has a fiat 500- great. I think I paid 4.5k for it this time last year. It’s got quite low mileage. She’s still learning.

ds1 has a Citroen c1 (my old car)- well, his fiancé does. He can’t drove yet but is learning.

ds2 bought a Hyundai veloster- this is very much NOT recommended (quite big and speedy!) but he bought it and loves it. £8.5 k

Dds boyfriend has a vw polo as does a friend of hers.

Before we bought a car I looked at insurance. The cheapest to insure were C1, Peugeot 107, aygo and Ford ka. I was shocked at how expensive a second hand mini was and also how much it was to insure!

TwoPointFourCatsAndDogs · 11/04/2023 07:50

Kia Piccanto for DS, it seems to have a few extra air bags for rear passengers.

WeAllHaveWings · 11/04/2023 07:53

Fiestas seem to be the most popular around here for ds and his age group.

Skoda Citigo? Our car is a Skoda Citigo and it's great - and we can just about cram all D1's stuff in it at the beginning and end of every university term (nearly 300 miles)

maddy68 · 11/04/2023 08:25

Check the insurance for each car as you start to cho. Ours had a corsa a a fiesta

Bought my DS a DS3 1.6 diesel. Cracking car with a a bit of street cred thrown in. Does almost 60 to the gallon, £) road tax and cheap to insure. It is a diesel so not overly fast but enough bp so that it is great for motorways too.

It's so good that I've got myself one too.

wantmorenow · 11/04/2023 08:25

Should say £0 road tax
