HPV vaccine

There was a catch up vaccination clinic advertised for today. I checked with the vaccination team who confirmed that DS (now 16) has not had it. They told me to ring his GP. Why are GP's not informing parents of missed vaccinations?

Because these are given through schools and organised by a completely different team who cover a larger area than your GP's surgery.

ToadSmall · 24/10/2022 17:57

Yes, I had similar and the GP said it was not their thing. They can't give it to them as they are a different system.

My dd ended up having it two years later at her school.

QuillBill · 24/10/2022 17:58

People may feel harassed if GPs are telling the, about vaccines they have 'missed' if they have decided not to have them.

fizzypop100 · 24/10/2022 18:03

Not had it at school. Don't know why? Could be due to lockdowns ?

I was never given it in school either (28 now). I've had 2 positive HPV tests with no abnormal cells and got another smear tomorrow, so fingers crossed this one is negative.

fizzypop100 · 24/10/2022 18:14

@1994girl I hope it all works out well for you. This is precisely why I want my son to get the vaccine

I would ask school. It would be unusual for them not to have done them

TeenDivided · 24/10/2022 18:19

Boys weren't originally given the vaccine, only girls.
Boys only eligible if born after 1st Sept 2006.

Sandysandwich · 24/10/2022 18:22

Could he not have been the right age at the time?
I think they only started giving it to boys in year 9 in 2019 - if he was in a different year when his school rolled it out he wouldn't have had it maybe?

TeenDivided · 24/10/2022 18:23

re dates eligible see: www.nhs.uk/conditions/vaccinations/hpv-human-papillomavirus-vaccine/

savoycabbage · 24/10/2022 19:03

My 16 year old had it at school last year in year ten but my 17 year old niece had it in lockdown. They had to go to school in a can and put their arm out of the window!

Maybe because its not really needed?

Shortkiwi · 24/10/2022 23:26

HPV vaccine was introduced for Year 8 boys in academic year 2019/20. Only those born after 1st Sept 2006 are eligible. Was your son born before this date?
It’s a school based programme.

The NHS wouldn't waste hundreds of thousands of pounds vaccinating if they didn't believe there was a herd benefit.

Rubbish. It prevents cancer.

BHRK · 25/10/2022 07:02

It prevents cancer in men and women, it’s absolutely needed.

CaronPoivre · 25/10/2022 07:14

Better than just preventing cancer, it prevents cancers that have potential to affect the very young. No mothers want yo see their thirty something daughters dying of cervical cancer.
Mouth and throat cancers aren't nice.
