DS15, anxiety and medication

DS15 started receiving counselling 4 weeks ago for, we think, anxiety.
It initially started when he told us he was having palpitations and feeling nauseous. Many doctor and hospital appointments later, we and he came to the conclusion that it’s psychological and so found him a counsellor.

Last week, he had an important Maths test and came home extremely upset saying that he felt faint, his mind went blank and he couldn’t focus. He said that he can’t go on feeling like that. He’s in Year 11, so obviously we’re concerned about this affecting his schooling.

He thinks that it can be solved/helped by medication. Is this true? Do doctors prescribe meds to children for anxiety?
Is it a good idea?
I desperately want to help him but have told him that a tablet would only mask the real issue, it needs to be dealt with through talk therapy.
I’m also extremely wary of giving him an emotional crutch which he may get addicted to going forward.
I’ve explained to him that counselling isn’t a quick fix but should intimately equip him with coping mechanisms.
I’ve also told him that he won’t always feel like this, that so many other youngsters are going through it too.

Its so hard seeing him like this.

Does anyone have any positive experiences of medication helping their teen?

We couldn’t get antidepressants or anxiety meds for DD2 until she was18. GPS can’t prescribe to under 18s - it has to be done by CAMHS or a private psychiatrist. Once she did get them it made an enormous difference to her life and well-being and she was back to her old self. Counselling wasn’t really very effective.

I was put on SSRIs for anxiety and panic attacks when I was 15, I've been on them all my life. They've made an enormous difference to my life. I'd probably be dead without them.

I've had about 10 years of counselling on and off. Sometimes it's not something that can be fixed as such. Some people do need to be medicated long term.

I don't see a problem with that. Some peoples brains are just different.

I’m all for medication, dd takes for anxiety and it’s worked where years of counselling hasn’t. My dd was prescribed citalopram at age15 by our gp. She was under Cahms but they had nothing to do with the prescription my gp was happy to do it.

My 11 yo is on meds. If they help why wouldn't you use them?

Dd is on Sertraline for anxiety, it has transformed her life. She is also having CBT but the medication is what really made the difference.
