My child is currently being assessed for Autism, having sat GCSE's this year. What can I do if she doesn't get a college plac

Mine didn't pass any last year due to missing y11.
She has done a level 1 course at college (animal care), will do a slightly different level 1 this year (with more writing) and then maybe a level 2 the year after.

She will get a college place, but it may be to do a lower level than planned.
e.g. level 3 - might need 5 at grade 4, level 2 - 4 at grade 3 incl English & maths, level 1 - 3 at grade 1.

They can have funding for 3 years at college, or more if they have an EHCP.

Has your DD applied for a college course she wants to do ?
Most make an offer on predicted grades but will offer a lower level if results don't come in as expected.
They also offer re sits of maths and English that run along side the course.

LIZS · 21/08/2022 19:20

They may offer a level 2 or 1 instead, alongside resitting English and
Maths gcse or functional skills, or Life Skills which can be entry level activities with embedded numeracy and literacy.

What sort of grades are you anticipating?
What has she applied to do at college?
(Are we talking applied for A levels but may gets 3/4s, or applied for BTEC L3 or what?)

I didn’t do my GCSE’s at all due to really bad bullying at school (was physically attacked). I got a place at college and did my maths/English and then went on to do a law degree. I now own 2 successful businesses.

it was hard but well worth it! (I’m currently undergoing an assessment for autism/ADHD

Your current school should be able to help you here. But have a Google college courses that are level 1 or 2. (Level 1 is equivalent to GCSE grades 1-3, level 2 equivalent to GCSE 4-9 and level 3 matches to A-levels).

If she hasn’t got a 4 or higher in maths and English, then she will have to resit both of those which can be daunting.

Remember to show her you love her, and she is more than just her grades.

Saw this from BBC bite size and thought it might be helpful.

What to do if my child doesn't pass GCSE's?

My son has just done a Level 3 Btec course alongside a few friends who originally failed their GCSE's. Depending on how badly they did they either had to do a Level 1 or Level 2 Btec to start with, alongside re-sitting maths & English.

One of his friends who clearly displays neurodiverse traits (I suspect ADHD) has just passed Leve 3 with D star D star D and has a university place for September. Another of his friends passed with lower grades and is going into employment in an area that he loves.

It’ll depend on what they hope to do? But there are options for Level 1 and 2 courses, apprenticeships, exemptions…can you tell us abit more about what grades they’re expecting and what they’d like to do next?

Hellocatshome · 23/08/2022 17:56

Lots of college courses available without having any GCSEs they will just have to continue with Maths and English until they get the required standard.

Does she have an EHCP? If not look at the process now. Lots of charities available to help you with an application - IPSEA for one. EHCP provides support up to the age of 25, if needed.
