largeprintagathachristie · 06/08/2022 18:49

Soon to be 17 year old teen has just said "no-one" has holiday jobs anymore

Thoughts?!

Other info:
The teen will going into year 12 in September
Clearly the time has passed anyway for this holiday but I'd like to sow the seed for next year

Mine do - a year older than yours which may make it easier to find one but there are plenty of jobs around this year.

oldestmumaintheworld · 06/08/2022 20:07

Both mine did. Daughter looked after children using experience gained as cub leader and babysitting from age 14. Son worked in cafe.

cheninblanc · 07/08/2022 09:08

Mine do! 18 and 16 and have done for 18 months now

AuntieMarys · 07/08/2022 09:14

Mine did from 16. Transferred when they went to their university city, so worked 16-21

KittenKong · 07/08/2022 09:15

He’s about to - and 4 of his friends that I know about also do (restaurant, theatre, entertainment, shop).

SeasonFinale · 07/08/2022 09:18

Nice try OP's son!

spagbog5 · 07/08/2022 09:22

Dd3 is the same age and works two days a week and does babysitting and pet feeding etc for neighbours as needed and her older sisters both worked too .

Hyperion100 · 07/08/2022 09:25

How does he expect to earn money?

littlefireseverywhere · 07/08/2022 09:27

All kids do that age near me.

MumofSpud · 07/08/2022 09:31

Yes - DD(16 soon 17) has as do most of her friends
Restaurants / cafes / babysitting/ garage are the ones they all do

And actually thinking about it none work in shops!

Fiddlersgreen · 07/08/2022 09:32

Yes, DS is a year older but working in a pub until uni. Last summer he worked in a shop

NinetyNineRedBalloonsGoBy · 07/08/2022 09:37

Yes ds is same age and working as a waiter.

KingscoteStaff · 07/08/2022 09:39

SW London here.
Both DC sporty, so did their first coaching badges at 15/16 in a couple of sports and then worked on holiday courses - tennis/cricket/hockey.

Other friends worked in cafes from 16 or for parents’ businesses.

Most lucrative (and available from 14, I think) was the football ref qualification - we have loads of under 8/9/10 league matches around us, which all need a ref. The matches are only 30 mins long and you get a fee for each one.

It was noticeable that those children with wealthy ‘entrepreneur’ type parents were the first to be nudged into holiday/weekend jobs.

141mum · 07/08/2022 18:10

Yes, London, she works in McDonald’s, tbh, she wasn’t made to, her choice, but v v proud, good pay, 18- 24 hours a week, keeps half , saves half, all her friends work, and a lot of year 11 work there, also like her just finished Year 13

Womblesaremyfavouritefood · 08/08/2022 07:41

Yes of course they work. My DC has just finished Y11 and is one of very few of their year NOT to be working (couldn't fit it around summer commitments). We're actually looking at volunteering roles in the autumn term for them, but if they do that I'll increase their weekly allowance so gey some financial recompense.

aposseadesse · 08/08/2022 18:21

Yes - has done since she was 14. Mainly tutoring and teaching instruments/singing - Diploma level in 3 so that will pay the best.

The trick is to find their talent and apply - mine is amazing with kids and very musical and academic so that works. She is also good with customers and food so has helped at lots of weddings too - both playing and waitressing/food prep so that can be really lucrative on a weekend.

HelenHywater · 08/08/2022 18:22

Yes. Lots of her friends do too.

LaurelGrove · 08/08/2022 18:25

Yep. Babysitting and drama camp counsellor. She's not around much this summer but is working when she is. The younger one does a small amount of babysitting (only next door's kids), waters gardens when people are on holiday and occasionally washes cars (not at the moment - water is too scarce, so he's offering them a wipe down with a damp sponge)

canellini · 08/08/2022 23:13

No , tho he's tried looking on Indeed. Not sure how to find one! Direct to supermarkets etc?

user1477249785 · 08/08/2022 23:21

It's a teachable moment though isn't it. Fine for your DCs not to get jobs but then they'll need to make do with no money. Because that's literally life.

FunsizedandFabulous · 08/08/2022 23:23

Not yet, but once she turns 16 I'll be encouraging her to.

Littlemissprosecco · 08/08/2022 23:30

Yes all mine had jobs/ volunteering from end of year 10
He’s trying it on OP

KittenKong · 09/08/2022 07:49

Looks like mine is getting a job with an electrician! At least he will be learning some life skills!
