Cars for teens

DS 17 is currently having driving lessons and I’m on the lookout to get him a car (with his trust fund). They all seem so expensive- I was thinking maybe a second hand Corsa or Fiesta.

I was interested in what other parents / teens do? Do you insure them on your car? (I’ve received a quote for £80 per month for him to drive my car!). Does everyone just keep an eye on the second hand car market? I don’t suppose leasing will be cost effective although I haven’t properly looked into this.

just interested in other peoples views

My parents got me a citreon in 2019 (is was 19) it was about £500 insurance just me with a black box device. However, this broke down a year later and was unrepairable without incurring costs of £1000+ and I then got a lease car/whatever it’s called from Bristol street motors- paying monthly- I wasn’t required to have a job/monthly income and it’s got a warranty in case it breaks down. If I was going back to before I got a car I wouldn’t buy a second hand one after what happened.

We got DS a 58 plate Corsa, it was £2k. We then insured it for us to drive on our own policy, about £140 for the year and insured him separately as a learner through Marmalade, this was about £165 for 6 months. There are other companies who just specialise in learners so hunt around.

Thank you both - I’ll continue with my research
