Daughter (17) started a part time job ten days ago in a cafe (doing short shifts from 4 to 10) and last night was dismissed by phone today, reason given was 'the relationship wasn't working out.'

What actually happened was the till was short by about £15 and she was told it would be taken from her wages. She hasn't yet been trained on the till - they said they thought she had. (Type of cafe where someone prepares food, boxes it and someone else works on the till). This would mean that her pay for yesterday would fall below the national minimum wage and she queried this. I also checked - legally they can't take anything from her unless she has signed something saying they can. She also does not have a contract.

Am I being precious about this - I get the impression they didn't like being challenged about the minimum wage issue.

What do you think?

I think as annoying as it is she should probably just move on and find a job elsewhere. Hopefully the next place will treat her better!

I agree. It's not fair but probably just best to move on.

No, they cannot make deductions from her wages unless it is in her contract or she has agreed to it in writing.

Poor thing. My dd is just about to start a first job too. I hope they treat her well.

I was also sacked from my first job as a teen. The manager was pilfering and he blamed it on us girls. About four of us for the boot.

We all got new jobs same day tho. It was easy then.

Good luck to your dd

It’s really rubbish but I’d cut her losses and find something else. Truth is, so many employers are awful, borderline illegal and if it’s cash in hand, no contract she will struggle to prove anything.
i hate to sound so dismissive, but you have to weigh up the cost or fighting versus the potential reward. Rubbish for your daughter bit hopefully she will find her feet elsewhere soon.

I think there is no point fighting this as the relationship has broken down regardless of why and whose fault it is and presumably DD doesnt want to continue working there after they have been so unreasonable.

Ime when the till is up that is the clue to someone is pilfering. I hope she gets better employers soon.
