Black box

DD has recently passed her test and has the usual black box fitted to her car.

The data coming back is already saying she's got 9 occurrences of speeding after only the first month so has knocked her down to 50% on her app 🙄 They are tiny minor things, but like 32 in a 30, and on one estate, she has been doing 26 and they have lowered the speed to 20mph which she wasn't aware of (I must admit / neither was I 😬)

She has also been knocked down on the "night" tracker because she drove home from a friend's house at midnight. Does this mean if she keeps using the car at night they can effectively cancel her policy? She sometimes works until 11.00pm and would then need to travel home 🤷🏻‍♀️

I've told her she has to watch her speed more carefully. Am I right in thinking they can cancel insurance if you drive too fast etc? At the end of her policy, if we go with another insurance provider, does the data from the black box transfer (like speeding points and accidents and claims), or does it just start again, with another telematics provider with different insurers?

But why - particularly as a new driver - would you drive 32 in a 30, when you know you are being monitored all the time ?

Same as the changing of speed limits. They've done it lots around where I live too an it is incredibly frustrating and, yes, I admit after driving for decades sometimes easy to forget. But she hasn't been driving for decades. She agreed to be monitored then isn't taking notice of speed limits. It makes no sense.

Surely she knew this when she bought the policy though ?
It is the reason none of mine had a black box - it didn't work with their shifts.

What she needs to know is for any future policy, she will have to answer the question 'have you ever had a policy cancelled?'

@Kite22 I thought I had asked about restrictions on driving time for this reason, and thought they had said it wasn't an issue just a guidance - but this app gives percentages for speed, braking and night.

I completely agree about why would you not make sure you drove within the speed limit 🤷🏻‍♀️ I've definitely made it plain if insurance gets cancelled, you're screwed. I do think a lot of "advice" and conversations with nearly 18 year olds falls on deaf ears though - they seem to think they know best 🤦🏻‍♀️

It doesn't sound like she is a good driver. DD had a black box last year, and didn't speed once. It's not difficult, tbh it doesn't sound like she is safe or ready to be driving on her own. Hopefully she will buck her ideas up sharpish and can salvage her future driving.

Hastings smart miles? I was with them when I first passed, nearly cancelled on me cause of the late night driving, I worked mainly evenings. She needs to be better on everything else, if score goes under a certain number for a set amount of time they'll cancel

blackboxes are really a load of crap, they go off at the slightest things and penalise you for them like sure you get cheaper insurance but god are they annoying

Can I ask which insurance company you’re with?
