Irregular periods in teenage dd?

My dd is 17 and started her period at 14. She got her 2nd period after 7 months. Since then her periods have been constantly irregular and with cycle lengths varying from 20 to 100 days. Is this normal?

I started at 9 and also had irregular periods until I had her.

We called the GP about a year ago who told her to wait a bit. She’s a bit concerned and thinks she should call the GP again.

You should call the GP. My daughter had this and was found to be have anemia and is now taking Ferrous tablets. If the bleed hasn’t return until September they will induce a bleed since the buildup of the uterus lining isn’t healthy.

I think it’s worth contacting the GP again. My periods were like this as a teenager - I have polycystic ovaries. I wasn’t diagnosed until my 20s and wish I’d gone to the dr sooner!

She’s going to call the GP tomorrow and hopefully get an appointment.

She’s a bit worried about possibly having a blood test but I’ve tried to reassure her as much as I can that it will be fine.

Dd has been told to book a blood test and that she will be referred to have an ultrasound. The GP said to book an appointment after the ultrasound where she will explain the results.

My daughter had this. She is a little younger than your daughter. Our gp sent her for a ultrasound which I think was a bit premature. However, as your daughter older it is worth it. After doing the ultrasound they decided it was just because she is very slim so a but of a waste of time and her periods came back not long after. If sexually active they might do internal ultrasound (not expecting you to answer this, just forewarning). If not will be external.

My daughter started her periods at 11.5 and is now nearly 15. They have never been regular-varying from 30 days to about 70 days! It worries me... I think it may be Pcos... I plan to take her to the doctor soon. Problem is, she is not worried at all and isn't quite as motivated as I am to see the GP.
I will continue watching this thread as other people's experiences are helpful.

This is the 106th day of her current cycle and she’s getting really concerned. She’s had the blood test but hasn’t had the chance to speak to a GP about it yet, and we haven’t heard a whisper about the ultrasound yet.Sad

Oh bless you, I know how stressful this can be and feel for you both. Please update when you get the blood test results. I am planning to suggest a trip to the GP with my daughter today- her last cycle was 61 days!

Good luck @Candacej ! How is your daughter feeling about it?

I had a very irregular cycle in my teens and early 20s. I was given the pill to regulate it in my teens and told not to worry. Diagnosed with PCOS in my mid-20s. As an aside, it's been totally regular since I had my children.

DD, aged 15, has an irregular cycle too. I've offered to take her to the GP, but said I don't think there's much point at this stage. She has a genetic condition which we know will impair her fertility though, so a diagnosis of PCOS wouldn't change anything much for her on that score - I might feel differently about it otherwise (though I think I was much more ready to deal with it in my mid-20s than I would have been in my teens).

Hope things work out ok for those of you/your daughters who are concerned. I believe it's quite common to have an irregular cycle as a teen which resolves itself too.

How heavy is she OP ? Several friends had very irregular cycles as teenagers and in their twenties, and it seemed to be related to weight , if it went below a certain point then their periods would stop.
My dd is also 17 and her cycles are still a bit long. She is very light but not actually missing periods, nor is she really underweight I don’t think, just very slender and slight. I haven’t taken her for a check up yet but I’ve been thinking about it as it worries her.

Wavygravy1 · 24/08/2022 19:01

My DD is almost 16. She started her periods 2.5 years ago. They are not regular, can be 6-7 weeks between them.

entitledbluebird · 25/08/2022 11:09

@SirVixofVixHall She’s not underweight and hasn’t really had any fluctuations in weight.
