Growth spurt rate?

Does anybody recall how quickly their son grew during a teenage growth spurt? I'm wondering if mine is finally going through his.

My DS is now 15.5yrs, and just before his 15th birthday I spoke to the doctor as I was getting quite concerned about him. He's always been small and very slim, he was only 5'1 on his 15th birthday and often mistaken for a child age 10 or 11. His friends all tower above him and have deep voices and facial hair.

He had no signs of puberty that I could see at all, I did ask him about what was going on 'down below' as I know that's the first place they show signs, but obviously being the mum of a teenage boy meant I didn't see it anymore! He told me it was fine but I don't know if he was just saying that as he was embarrassed. He was very baby faced, no hair in his armpits, and no spots. I didn't tell him I'd spoken to the doctor as I didn't want to worry him, he was a bit sensitive about it anyway (it doesn't help that his sister was 5'9" by the same age) so I didn't want to make that worse. The doctor said that as he was growing, albeit very slowly, to just keep an eye things and bring him back in the summer if nothing had changed.

He seems to suddenly have started growing more, he's now almost 5'4, and and has grown 4cm in the past 2 months. He's got some spots and the hairs on his legs are suddenly looking coarser. He's eating more (he's always eaten very little) and started sleeping in a bit (he's always been up at the crack of dawn).

Am I right in thinking that he might finally be having the famous teenage growth spurt, and puberty has kicked in? And I shouldn't bother taking him back to the doctors?

Thanks all.

Sounds like it to me. I’d hold off for a bit.

Everybody hits puberty at somepoint obviously, so it inevitable it'll happen and everyone is different some start early some much later. my brother was a very late developer and didn't hit puberty till around 17/18 I remember him passing his driving test and having to sit on cushions! people were shocked to see what they thought was a little boy driving and he was 18! He soon caught up as will your son and it does look like it's happening for him by the sounds of it.
