I have no idea what he needs to do and I want to help him. I don't want to interfere or do it for him but he has asked for advice. He's been on Indeed (there was a thread here last week about that) and he has filled in a few applications.

He has no CV as such. Did a tiny bit of volunteering for DoE but COVID impacted that. Does he put on things like tennis and swimming as skills just to bulk it out? Some of the jobs have the option to upload a letter? Should he? Would it worth paying for him to do a food hygiene course just to keep him occupied for the nex few weeks. He'll be back in 6th form before we know it.

He only needs a few hours a week. We do not live in a place with all these jobs that we keep hearing about. In fact we have found very few that he can apply for given his age and not being old enough to drive or work late/early shifts. There is a fair bit of bar work and early morning shop work. I've looked up the rules and as he is just 16 (2 weeks ago) he isn't allowed to work very early or late. However, there is something about an exemption for certain industries. Does that mean she should apply to tesco etc who want possible 5am starts.

Not all employers have the procedures in place to hire under 18's - those who do (at least bigger organisations) will be aware of the rules. If there's a McDonald's nearby i do recommend them - they were very on the ball with regulations and have lots of young staff so my dd made friends too. (Note as many are franchises it's worth trying more than one branch if logistically possible).

Locally to me many cafes and restaurants hire youngsters through the summer as we are semi touristy, and another thought is life guarding if yes a good swimmer, my local outdoor pool is offering to pay for a weeks intensive course upfront for 16 year olds on condition they work for them until university.

I've suggested that and said I will pay but he isn't keen.

If it's more about "keeping busy" he could do the National Citizen Scheme over the summer.

Needmorelego · 21/06/2022 10:50

Sorry it's 'service' not scheme.

this is really helpful. I'll help him with a CV and send him off

Good luck to him, OP! Let us know how he gets on!

We looked at that but we aren't in England

@workage16 oh I assumed it was a full UK thing as it's called 'National'.
If he doesn't get a job then he could go down the volunteer route anyway. Things like community gardens or British Wildlife Trust might be nice to volunteer at during the summer.
What are his plans for September? Is there something linked with that he could volunteer with?

Oh was going to suggest volunteering at Commonwealth Games but just seen you don't live in England. My 16 year old in 2 weeks is volunteering as a net bowler for Ladies Cricket teams.

Don’t bother with indeed its a waste of time. Go into your local shops, cafes, pubs and ask directly if they’re hiring .

workage16 · 24/06/2022 11:34

reporting back - its amazing. He has been offered 3 interview for jobs within easy walking distance today and he has an interview at McDonalds tomorrow. Thanks everyone. He did the door to door CV thing. I helped with the CV but he did the legwork. I can't believe there are so many jobs out there,

He could ask people in his sixth form, they may be giving up jobs to go to uni. That's how my 6th former got his job.
