Do you regret having teeth extracted for braces?

Just that really? I've read about people regretting it especially sunken faces, profile changes and breathing problems. Do you regret it and wish you hadn't had the teeth extracted?

How many teeth are you talking?

alltables · 15/06/2022 21:36

4 2 at top and 2 at the bottom?

No I can't say I ever give it any thought unless it comes up in conversation somehow. The majority of my friends also had 4 out and as far as I'm aware have had no issues, I didn't realise the things you mentioned were a thing!

God no ! Love my straight teeth. Best thing ever. Sister chose not to as a teen, hated having photos taken , and finally had braces in her 40s. Looks amazing. Massive regret not doing it as a teen , but was worried about how much work was needed.

Discovereads · 15/06/2022 21:37

No. Never. Orthodontists don’t require teeth be removed for fun, it’s because you have over-crowding. Extraction of the teeth the orthodontist wants done does not result in sunken faces, profile changes or breathing problems.

The straightening of you teeth does result in profile change if you have an over or under bite, but the change is for the better.

All my DC had 1-3 teeth that had to be removed per the orthodontist. They now have perfect teeth.

bumpertobumper · 15/06/2022 21:37

I had 4 out, as did several people I know who had races. I sometimes wonder how my teeth could possibly all fitted in as there is no space.
Never heard of regret around it.

2DemisSVP · 15/06/2022 21:38

I had 4 out AND wisdom teeth out. Never even given it a second thought.

fairgame84 · 15/06/2022 21:38

No it didn't make any difference. The removed the 4 teeth to allow the others to move and close the gaps so it never looked abnormal or caused any issues.
I never heard of any of those issues you mentioned from extraction for braces.

Howeverdoyouneedme · 15/06/2022 21:39

I had four out. No problems.

mommandme · 15/06/2022 21:39

No. I've had 12 teeth out in total (small, overcrowded mouth) - 4 baby, 4 adult, 4 wisdom. Never given it a second thought.

OperaStation · 15/06/2022 21:51

Of course not. They only remove them if your mouth is overcrowded. You don’t end up with gaps or a “sunken face” because the braces move the teeth to fill the gaps.

What have you been reading OP?!

alltables · 15/06/2022 22:12

Thanks for all the replies. I think I've just fallen down a google rabbit hole with this. They don't seem that overcrowded, but maybe I'm just used to them.

Google has some horror stories about pre-brace extraction. I worked myself into a state about 14yo DS having his done.
He's 14 months into his brace and it looks great. He face shape is absolutely fine.

Yodaisawally · 20/06/2022 12:29

I had two and all wisdom teeth taken out, no issues at all.

Reekingpitofdoom · 22/06/2022 15:49

I could have had a brace for my “marginal” teeth but said no at the time. Regretted it and got brace aged 40. So much happier.

FLOWER1982 · 22/06/2022 15:51

I’m having Invisalign treatment and my dentist said they try and avoid extracting teeth these days. They have thinned mine out very slightly so my teeth have room to move into place.

GreenManalishi · 22/06/2022 15:55

I do! In other countries they use expanders rather than remove them. I've got big and expensive issues now requiring an expander in my 40s because of extractions in my teens.

lunar1 · 22/06/2022 16:00

God no, I had two removed, then braces. I looked like goofy before them!

Lolliesareonme · 22/06/2022 16:01

Are you talking about you as an adult, or for a child?

I had 2 upper and 2 lower extracted in the ‘olden days’, DD had none removed, but had a functional appliance, then braces - her side profile and smile is far nicer than mine. But you can only have that done at an early age.

steelseries · 22/06/2022 16:05

I had 4 teeth removed and now have straight teeth but my understanding was that it's now considered an outdated practice and rather the palate should be widened to accommodate the teeth. I don't regret having them out but I do have quite a gap between the edge of my smile and my teeth (as opposed to the wide American smile)

WhenDovesFly · 22/06/2022 16:07

I don't think they extract nowadays unless the mouth seems overcrowded. My teen DD needed extensive work due to uneven teeth and a severe overbite. Because I'd had 4 teeth out as a teen I assumed that's what they'd do to her, but they managed to realign by using different types of braces.

StrugglingPianist · 22/06/2022 16:12

I'm another who had 4 out (two top, two bottom) and then had all my wisdoms removed when they came through. No regrets at all. The gaps where the teeth were closed as a result of the 2 years of braces, to the point that I can't tell where they actually were now and the dentists seem to disagree with my memories when they're doing the counting teeth thing, and I have lovely straight teeth now.

DramaAlpaca · 22/06/2022 16:18

Back in the 70s I had four out, two top and two bottom. If I hadn't, there wouldn't have been room for my wisdom teeth to come down without ruining my lovely, straight teeth. No regrets at all.

musicviking1 · 22/06/2022 16:36

In the 90s I had two top teeth taken out for a brace when I was 12, my cousin sat in another dentist chair next to mine had hers done straight after mine. The extractions allowed two teeth in my gums to come down. I had so many problems with my braces and teeth afterwards, even now in my 40s my bite is all wrong and I have a clicky jaw and side fillings from the braces - so it's the braces I regret and the dentist I had.
