Would you allow your 17 year old to work late shifts?

17 year old boy; 18 in 2 months time.

Job would be kitchen staff in a pub which serves food until 11pm. So he would need to stay until 12/1 to help clean up.

I am not a parent, especially not to a teen, so very interested in what the response would be for this.

It would be fine by me so long as it didn’t affect college work. That said they must be coming to the end of 6th form. Absolutely fine for them to do it over the holidays.

If it was post exams (presuming he was in year 13), then yeah, no problem.

For my own peace of mind I would want to make sure safe transport was sorted though, e.g. no walking through dodgy areas to get to a bus stop.

At that age ( and leaving school etc) many young people will be about to head off to uni or gap years or flatting away from home or all sorts of things.

Those who are saying he is almost an adult are missing the point that is illegal for him to work past midnight under any circumstances and there are limited circumstances where he can work until midnight. Whilst 2 months might not seem much an employer who is willing to break the law on this gives an indication of what else they might be breaking the law on too.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 13/06/2022 09:33

i am not sure - what are the buses like at tht time? the area?
my dd was coming home at 4.00 in the morning however she had left home and was 22

Comefromaway · 13/06/2022 09:40

The night buses are pretty good in London. Dd started working late nights in London when she was 19 and she had only just moved there. But the difference was that her workplace only employ over 18's to ensure everything is legal and their h & s is spot on.

HouseofHolbein · 13/06/2022 09:47

My 16 year old works a couple of nights a week in a local restaurant. She does 5:30-11:30 usually. They work around the buses for her or give her a lift home afterwards.

When she hits 17 I'm hoping she'll get a job at the supermarket I'm at which will be mornings instead and more local. And more money 🤣🤣

worriedatthistime · 13/06/2022 10:07

@Comefromaway exactly and then would he even be insured
My ds works at maccies and is 17 and they can only start at a certain time and work until A certain time , they are really quite strict about it all
At 18 its different

CakesOfVersailles · 13/06/2022 11:40

@Comefromaway

Yes good point, I was assuming the working past midnight would only start at 18 but that's not indicated in the original post.

Brideandprejudice · 13/06/2022 11:42

I see no problem.

balalake · 14/06/2022 18:40

Would depend on the day of the week.

swapcicles · 14/06/2022 18:46

If he's sensible and can look after himself then should be fine, depends on the area though, whether it's safe enough to be alone at night.
Dd works til 10 4 nights a week, I usually give her a lift home or one of her mates does as I don't feel its a safe route all the way home by herself if walking and no buses easily either.

Roselilly36 · 14/06/2022 18:52

DS1 used to work till late, in his first job, a few nights a week, gave him some great life skills tbh.
