Tell me about septum piercing for teens

My 15 year old daughter wants to have her septum pierced. From my perspective, it feels like a radical piercing, because when I was a teen (in the 80's!) it was not common at all. I do understand that I am biased, so in principle I've said OK, it's her nose. She wants to have it done tomorrow, even though we talked before about doing it at the beginning of the holidays to allow for maximum healing time. They are not allowed in school but she tells me people "just twist them up" inside the nose so they can't be seen.

From what I've read, they seem to take longer than ears to heal and it may not be as easy as just twisting it up at school certainly in the early week(s?). She has work experience with a bank in early July and I would worry they won't look favourably on her if they see she has one (again, I may be being a massive fuddy duddy here!)

I've tried to talk reasonably to her about putting it off till the end of term, and its not gone well!

Can anyone tell me any more about them and whether I'm being over the top? Thanks

Septums can take months and months to heal. When I had mine done after 6 months it still wasn't fully healed but okay to flip up.

It's a really tricky piercing for the piercer to get right so go to someone reputable. I definitely wouldn't be piercing a septum while still in school/on work experience during its early healing stages.

Assuming this isn’t just goading, I doubt any decent piercer will allow a 15 year old to have their septum pierced even with your consent. It’s a bloody awful piercing to heal, not a change in hell it will be able to be twisted up.

She 15, not an adult. You are in control, so say no. If she has a tantrum about it she’s clearly not mature enough anyway.

My 14yo wants this done. 2 piercers have said 16 - one said they wouldn't do it without seeing her first to assess if it is possible.

Another says 14 but tbh I am a bit wary given two others who have been in my town a lot longer don't at that age.

I had a lot of piercings when younger so am not against it in principal.

My 14yo has hers done. No tenderness to it after a week. Changed to a clear retainer and flips it up for school. Piercings like this are neither here nor there for me. I would draw the line at lips and eyebrow as they can't be hidden for school/future work. If she decided she didn't want it anymore nobody would ever know she'd had it.

Pull your septum down. There is a meaty bit at the bottom, followed by a thinner bit of skin then the cartilage. A decent piercer will aim for the thinner bit, the sweet spot. If they get that it won't hurt half as much and will be relatively easy healing. If she gets a septum retainer (looks like a letter U) it'll flip up inside her nose without much trouble. Septum piercings are considered pretty tame now and if she gets bored the scars are inside her nose and wont be seen.

My dd is her septum pierced in Feb. She is 16. She's never had an issue with it and wears it flipped for school so you can't see it. She cleans it daily. She didn't even flinch when getting it done (at a recommended tattoo shop).

Thanks for your replies - looks like a few differences in experiences, which I guess is to be expected - no one can predict how it will heal and therefore whether it’s likely to cause a problem for school/work exp.

I’ve had it done twice (took it out and then changed my mind and wanted it back). Easiest piercing to heal by miles and I could flip it up after 12 hours. Let her get it. Otherwise she’ll probably get it anyway and just flip it up around you so you don’t see
