Video homework

DS had some homework given out for computer science to read a piece of text. He got held back after class today to be told that his homework is not acceptable because he didn't have his microphone or camera on and the teacher wanted to hear him read aloud.
I'm not a fan of the teacher so not sure if this is altering my view, but does anyone else think this is weird? I don't know why, for a reading homework, he would need to submit a video. Is this a normal request? I could understand (tho again not sure I'd like it) if it was a drama piece of homework and it required a performance, but this just feels wrong.

Reading aloud is good for fluency and so comprehension. Teenagers need to be able to rehearse and repeat until they are accurate, as well as young children. Alongside showing that the work has been done, this is a valid method of instruction.
