Ownership of car for DS

DS will soon be 17 and we are fortunate enough to be able to buy him a car. My car is leased from and insured by my business and DH has a PCP deal for his. Should we buy the car in DS’ name or will that make it expensive to insure? Or is it best to do it this way from the start? TIA

Ownership won’t really impact insurance enough to make a significant cost difference.

DS was main driver, you or DH as additional driver should reduce the initial premium - which will be high at 17. Choose car with insurance on mind - use compare the market for a deal. The ownership of the car will not make a difference.

It doesnt really matter who owns the car. The only way it potentially will be cheaper is if you do this so you or your dh are down as the main drivers which is insurance fraud/fronting.

Try compare the market and also direct line. Buy a very low insurance group car. Look at black boxes. Make sure to add yourself and dh as additional (not main) drivers.

Ds(17) has recently passed, we got a 2015 low mileage 1.0L ecoboost fiesta for him, it is quite nippy and cost £1,050 to insure without a black box with direct line. expensive, but we expected that.

Thanks very much everyone, that all makes sense. What confused me was that a friend had mentioned a website that offers cheap temporary insurance for learner drivers that doesn’t impact the parents’ no claims bonus if there’s a claim. As DS will be learning in his own car I wondered if initially it should be in one of our names to be cheaper with us then transferring to him when he passes.

Ownership/registered keeper can indeed make a difference (I think mainly the registered keeper). I have an old car that DD now uses and pays for. I wanted to transfer ownership and/or registered keeper to her but the insurance would go up, so I still own it even though she's hundreds of miles away.

Also, it's cheaper if you name family members as other drivers on the insurance - DD is the main driver but DH and I are on it too. Remember too that insurance for learners can be far cheaper than insurance once they've passed!

I assumed you were talking about after he passed.

There is temporary learners insurance you can buy, we bought it for a couple of hours at a time to begin with then for 12 weeks before his test so we could supervise ds in our car when he was learning.

Not sure how it works for their own car. The popular learners insurance is Veygo and Marmalade.
