Contraceptive Pill for a 15 year old?

CassieJumped · 04/02/2022 12:35

Dd is 15 and not sexually active. We go away for three weeks in the summer and she will be due on whilst we are away (as will 13 year old dd)
She's asked if I will get an appointment to get her put on the pill so she can take it constantly whilst we are away so she (probably) won't have a period.
Just wondering what peoples thoughts are on this?
Both girls are super heavy for the first three or four days and can't manage tampons.

You can get period delay tablets too (think its norethisterone)

CharacterForming · 04/02/2022 12:39

Entirely reasonable but she doesn't need a proper pill prescription - she'd probably get norethisone prescribed specifically for this purpose. (I think you can buy it OTC as well).

Thanks for the quick replies. I'll have a look online at that. Do you think they would give it to the 13 year old too?
Also sexual health clinic rather than doctors? You can't physically get in to see ours at the moment and have to write out a full description of what you want then for. I have no idea who reads it before the doctor sees it.

You can only phone and ask. It’s hardly shameful to ask at a medical practice about period delay. It’s used for exams, holidays and big events.

Crabwoman · 04/02/2022 12:52

I wouldn't worry who sees it, it isn't that unusual a request so receptionists won't bat an eyelid.

Just say daughter has very heavy periods and you would like to request norethisterone for a family holiday.

I am 38 and had it prescribed intermittently as a young teenager due to heavy periods. Exams, ballet shows, holidays etc.

I think I eventually went on the pill around 13/14 to manage them, it was not unusual in my peer group.

I was put on the pill aged 13 by my gp as my periods were incredibly heavy. Just ask them.

Thank you

Terrible, the pill is really bad for you

ringoutthebells · 04/02/2022 12:57

I absolutely would not meddle with hormones and cycles for the sake of a holiday. Really don't think it's good for the body. But then I wouldn't take the pill either.

lovescaca · 04/02/2022 13:02

@ringoutthebells

I totally agree

Helenluvsrob · 04/02/2022 13:06

Yes it’s an option as are the period delay progesterone tablets .

Get the girls to have a phone chat with the Gp with you present as it’s their choice.

Period swimwear with a thought too

I was put on the pill for really heavy periods aged 15. I was vomiting every month and missing school. I was on it over 10 years and gained tonnes of wait and my mental health was all over the place. I came off it on doctors advice as my periods were strange and I started bleeding all the time just very lightly. I then was prescribed northisterone which I hated, my stomach swelled up and none of my clothes fit almost instantly. I just felt bloated and ill while taking it. Another trip to the doctors and they tried to put me on the pill again. I said absolutely no hormones and ended up on transexamic acid. I take it for the heavy days and It's great, doesn't stop the period and I still get a bit of pain but no sickness and bleeding much more under control. I wish they'd given me that at 15 instead of the pill. My advice would be to talk to a few different doctors. I definitely felt pushed towards the hormones and wasn't made aware of other options.

wtf

Be careful of the period delay tablets. A work mate ended up with all sorts of hormonal problems after taking it, and had a bloody big period when it was supposed to be delayed.

MrsFionaCharming · 17/02/2022 21:52

I used norithsterone for a holiday. I didn’t get a proper period, I still got spotting and period pain, followed by the period from hell.

If they really want to do it, I’d maybe do it the month before and push the cycle back in advance, so they’re not dealing with side effects on holiday.
