Anyone familiar with driving in Salisbury?

DS has booked a short notice cancellation driving test in Salisbury. It's not local to us so we drove down today for some practice.

Came across the section of Lavertstock Road with what seems to be a cycle lane in the middle of the road (markings are quite worn). Its the section at the bottom of the hill - its between the bridge/Bourne Avenue and the mini roundabout at the top by Godolohin School/The Avenue.

Despite googling and checking the highway code I cannot understand how you drive it avoiding the cycle lane.

We dont have an instructor as we've not been able to find one with availability.

I know it's a long shot, but is anyone familiar with it?

You could try looking for a local Fb group

I know this section and the cycle lane is broken white markings. So technically drive on other side of road to avoid the faded cycle lane unless it is unavoidable. The times I've been through there is usually oncoming traffic so people drive in the cycle lane. If it were unbroken solid white line this wouldn't be permitted. There is also a cycle lane for a section at the edge of the other lane if memory serves although I think cars park on that side!

It's broken white lines, which you can cross if you need to as long as there's nothing in your way. It's there to emphasise that cyclists can/should take that position in the road and you as a car driver have to work around that (wait to overtake or follow behind the cyclist).

Ok - so if there are no bikes then position yourself on the left of the road and drive over the bike lane as if it is not there?

And if there is a bike then remain behind them and overtake on the far right if / when possible?

Yep.

With the caveat that I haven't driven that way lots, but there's a similar setup on a road where I do drive and cycle lots and that's what everyone does.

(oh, and it's called an advisory cycle lane if you want to Google it.)
