Hi there,

My dd 12 who dances has dance exams coming up in a couple weeks, the exams are over 2 weekends. She started her periods recently. She's had 2 so far and her next one is going

most probably going to fall on one of the dance exam days. She is just getting to grips with it all and uses pads but I know for the ballet exam I
in particular this could be awkward. One of the mums told me there can't be any lines under the leotard and no pants can be worn.I'm thinking she is going to have to try and get to grips with tampons? I'm just wondering if anyone has had the same issue. I have found some seam free periods pants online.

I would speak to the teacher and ask her advice.

I don’t know which exam board it’s with, but RAD who I am familiar with are very clear that they don’t deduct any marks for uniform as long as it is clean, neat and appropriate, so some black tight fitting shorts could certainly be worn in the circumstances.

The most important thing is that your DD feels comfortable and performs her best. At 12, nothing else is important.

Period pants have always been fine at my daughters ballet school. Also footless black tights are a must too (or whatever colour your school has). If it's the pink ballet tights then I'd be going for the period pants, your DD might not want to try tampons yet - although for my daughter they've been the best thing she's ever done once she got over the trauma of putting one in for the first time.

Not a dance mum but was a dance teen myself and period days were awful when dancing. Definitely do not try to get her to start using tampons for this. If she doesn’t put it in far enough (which she probably won’t, teen girls have no concept of how far back the cervix is) then it will start to fall out as she dances and that is a horrible feeling and she risks leaking too. Period pants or stick with a pad and wear black leggings or shorts or tights over or under whichever looks most appropriate.

She will be wearing pink tights for the ballet. I've just ordered some nude high leg period pants from modi bodi.

Thank you! I don't think she wants to try yet. She's just getting use to having them at the moment.

Thank you. She really enjoys her dancing. I will speak to her teacher at some point. It was another parent going on about they can't have any pants etc...they're new to this dance school too.
