DS 13 has most of baby teeth still-anyone else experienced similar with their DC?

DS (13 in March) has only lost 8 baby teeth (4 front top and 4 front bottom). He's been worried about it for a while now. I pushed to see the dentist during covid who took xrays and reassured us that all his adult teeth are there, lined up and ready to go. He's referred DS to the orthodontist but there's a 2 year wait which will take DS to 14. He said this is good as he has the 2 years for the teeth to fall out. His last tooth came out 4 years ago. It seems really odd to me that they've just stopped and I can't imagine why they'd suddenly start falling out again. What will happen if they don't? That's a lot of teeth to have pulled out! I know I need to speak to the dentist again but I just wondered if anyone had any experience of this.

Did he get his first teeth quite late?

He was 14 months when he cut his first tooth and 7 and a half when he lost his first one.

Dealing with this now with DD14. She is quite petite and very slow growing. Her teeth have been appalling for at least 5 years now but all the dental/ortho people said wait for the baby teeth to come out.

I even had a private evaluation done several years ago but the private ortho said wait for adult teeth to come through so I don't think it's just the NHS being cheap.

Now most of her adult teeth have come through on the sides of her baby teeth without knocking them out! So her ortho has written to her dentist to say please extract them and we are waiting on the dentist's invitation. The ortho assures me that DD still has plenty of growth time left and that despite all the time we've wasted waiting for baby teeth to go, treatment will be successful.

So it's maddening to have to wait but I think it will all be ok in the end.

That is pretty late for original teething so may just take a bit more time.

I can't remember when my son's final teeth fell out ...! Probably by the end of primary.

tarheelbaby thankyou, that's reassuring to hear. Best of luck with your DDs treatment.

Techno56 I remember losing 2 teeth in secondary school and it being a novelty but DS has all his molars left. I think im more concerned that they've stopped coming out, I just cant imagine that they'll start getting wobbly again after a 4 year break.

DD is 15 and still stubbornly holding onto one baby tooth, dentist isn’t worried she has a referral pending to orthodontist. They expect it to fall out anytime as adult tooth is there.
