How much for DC uni?

Eldest DC is off to uni next year. I know contributions and individual financial situations are all different but how much are you spending on supporting your dc through uni and / or saving with them not living at home? Interested to hear how others are managing and approaching it.

We pay the rent approx £6k and & £300 a month. They’ve also got a part time job 12-18 hours a week which I think pays about £9 an hour

We paid the rent for our 2 and they lived on the loan (min) for everything else apart from travel home costs which we also covered.

Thanks for all your responses. Ds will also only get the minimum maintenance loan leaving a shortfall of at least 1k to cover rent. Then of course there is monthly food and travel etc. I’m panicking how we are going to cover all this to be fair.

Ds has the minimum which is just over £4k , he has that for food, clothes, going out etc and we pay his rent which is about £160 a week. He works in the summer to top up.

I have twins starting university next year, both will get minimum loan which we will put towards accommodation, then top this up and pay them a monthly allowance (over 10 months) to make it up to the full maintenance loan amount. This is their preference.

Your DC will have three to four months between school and university. Will they be able to get a job in that time? Even if they are working for minimum wage they should be able to save quite a substantial sum of money to help them through the first year and they can then do the same again in subsequent summer vacations.

DD in 3rd year. Her maintenance loan was spent on rent ( catered) and we covered the difference. She had worked and saved prior to uni for her socialising costs. We pay phone and travel and anything educational.

Should add that after the first year in catered halls, DD is in a shared house. Again the loan pays most of her rent and we pay the difference which is about £1000, plus we give her £100pm for food(she’s vegetarian ) plus her phone and travel still.

£1000 pa for us to pay, plus landlord deposits of £400 pa that you hopefully get back.

DD got minimum loan, which wasn't enough for accomodation (including bills but no food). She used loan for accomodation & we made up the difference and gave her £50 per week for food & entertainment. I also paid for her phone & gave her money to cover rail fare home occasionally. She didn't have any travel costs to university, or many costs associated with her course - but we did fund these as they happened (eg trips & books). Might have given her a bit more for the first week or so to pump prime her.
£50 meant she had to budget with a set amount of money each week (life skill) and encouraged her to work during holidays. I think if we had given her £100 she may not have worked during holidays & working helped her well being particularly during the long summer holidays.
As others have said you might make some savings at home in reduced travel costs and lunches that offset the weekly payment.
She managed ok on this for 4 years at Northern University.

Minimum loan here

We pay accommodation and phone.
After that they’re on their own. No way would I be paying for cars etc!

MrsLargeEmbodied · 07/11/2021 09:42

maximum loan for dd
i pay for her phone use
she also works but does send out requests for money which i provide when asked

OnFormbySands · 07/11/2021 09:50

Minimum loan here too, we give £5k a year to top it up. Give it in 1/12 ths, one payment a month and they have to sort their own accommodation payments etc.

They also have a part time job.

BeyondMyWits · 07/11/2021 09:52

Minimum loan for our 2 here, we pay accomodation, they then have the same amount each for food/travel/books/living expenses.

We pay for it by saving, we have saved since they moved up to secondary school and showed academic promise.
