Hi

Has anyone's teen had thyroid issues I can talk to?

Thank you

My dd is 17 and was diagnosed with Hashimotos hypothyroidism about 3 years ago. She is on 75mcg of thyroxine per day.

Thanks @JohnnyBullets

My son has had many blood tests for what I think is under active - he had another test last week, I then get a text from the GP to say repeat in x4 weeks but no phone call.

It's so hard to get an appointment so I have to try again tomorrow as it's on the day appointments.

How many blood tests did your daughter have? Does she feel much better now on medication?

What were her symptoms?

My son gets colder than most boys I think his age.

Struggling with sport, he doesn't seem as fit as he used to be.

I haven't seen much growth this year or signs of puberty.

He is almost 13.

I've been Googling stuff but no idea what I'm looking for as need to soesk to his GP but just starting to really worry.

Thanks

Feeling cold is definitely one of the (many) symptoms my daughter has, along with tiredness, aches, low mood (a big one) and scant periods. Our GP hasn't been very proactive and she only has a blood test if we both think she's not doing so well. This hasn't been that often over the years and only when we've pushed for it. We have now changed GP practice but haven't been as yet. My daughter has seen a paediatric endocrinologist but it took a really long time to get an appointment . No extra answers or assistance was offered there really until she mentioned that her neck was 'lumpy' and was then sent for an ultrasound. I would keep pushing for another blood test for sure!

My ds is 13 & born with congenital hypothyroidism. He has a thyroid but it doesn’t work at all so in on levothyroxine for life. Can I help?

Remmy123 · 28/09/2021 08:51

Thanks - he has gone off to school very tired, no energy.

I have an appointment with his GP so will find out more re his thyroid levels.

A very sport boy to not being able to do much 😓

I hope that of and when he gets medicine for this there will be an improvement on energy levels as I feel very sorry for him.

GP said it's borderline overactive

His symptoms seemed to fit with under active

Anyway he is going to be referred now

My DS has recently had investigations due to out of normal range thyroid results but his paediatrician (he has another condition) reassures me that it is quite normal for levels to fluctuate in teenage boys. She said that GPs are really only used to adults who don't fluctuate much. We get bloods done every 6 months but things are more I the normal range now he's 15. Also, he was vit D deficient which exhibits as being cold, aches etc so that's something to think about.

Remmy123 · 28/09/2021 16:15

@Tiredpigeon thank you .. that is reassuring.

He has another autoimmune condition so has had a lot of hospital visits and now this.

He has had a full blood test so will check for vit D etc

My son's condition is also autoimmune and he was so worried about having another diagnosis but we are feeling more positive now. Hope you get the right outcome.

Remmy123 · 28/09/2021 17:44

@Tiredpigeon pleased all is with your son.

Did they do the antibody test on him?

They have for my son and I'm just dreading it being positive.

Yes, thankfully it came back negative.

Resurrecting this again - son is stil having regular blood tests his TSH is showing at OVER active

He has no symptoms but occasionally has shaky hands, that appears only symptom.

At which point do they start medicating? We keep just keep having blood tests it says borderline sub clinical each time - it has slightly declined on the recent test

We are with a private doctor under my husbands insurance and seeing him in a couple of weeks.

Thanks
