Snack money

How much would you add to a 16yo's prepaid food account at school? Takes packed lunch as is quite fussy so this is just for the odd snack. Is £20/month mean? £10/week too much?

If she’s taking a packed lunch, I wouldn’t add anything at all to prepaid food account. Or perhaps keep a fiver on it as emergency money in case she forgets her packed lunch.

Can you find out how much snacks are and go from there? I think most snacks are between 50p and £1.50 at my kids school.

SuperstarDog · 27/09/2021 09:08

Or start with £20 and see how much he spends in the first week or two, presuming you can look on an account online like we can?

What would you like them to buy? If you want it to be an occasional treat, then £5 a week. If it’s a drink/croissant/cookie every day, then £10?

Thank you all. I agree it's not really needed, but I am OK with a bought treat or a drink every now and then. I've put £10 in and will see how that develops - and yes, I can see what it is spent on online, so I will check.

My eldest takes a packed lunch and a healthy snack but has £2 a day for a break time snack.
He has two breaks on a long day where he starts at 8.30 and finishes as 4.40.

My 13yo takes snacks from home or uses her pocket money for snacks. They are a non essential treat so it's up to her if she wants to spend her money on them or not.

My Dd gets free school meals which is roughly £2.20 so I top it up an extra £10 a week. Some weeks she spends it all others hardly any. So I would try £10 a week and see how she gets on.

13yo DD gets £10 a week. But she takes a couple of things with her too.

Thank you all.

Mine takes nothing from home these days and I top up his account with £15-20 a week - this gives him £3 + for lunch and snacks each day

Mumdiva99 · 27/09/2021 19:03

My nearly 14 year old gets money added when he needs it. If, over a month he has too much then I give him an extra sandwich for a while (he does go through growth spurts sometimes when he's really hungry.)
I think 2 snacks a week and a bought lunch on Friday is about right......my daughter has just gone to secondary and is managing lots of snacks.....we will need to have a chat soon as I think she's getting too much cake!

For reference my kids don't get regular pocket money, so I see this money a bit like pocket money..... but they are normally quite sensible children.....when I point out they can get 10 biscuits for £1 in B*M rather than the 1 at school they normally get it.....

So £10 every few weeks added should be enough....

My ds takes a packed lunch most days. He has £10 a week which covers snacks and the odd meal. Between £5 and £10 a week should be plenty if she's taking lunch every day.
