My ds received a letter from the GP practice just after his 14th birthday stating that he now had access to his own medical records and had to make his own appointments, and that his parents could no longer speak to the GP about him. If he wants us to be able to access his records, make appointments etc, he has to write them a letter.
I have concerns about this as my ds is autistic and I would have thought this would show up on his records. But I'm interested more generally in whether all GP practices are taking this approach. As I understood it, there is no set age at which children can make their own medical decisions - rather it's up to the medical professional to judge whether they have the competence/understanding to do so. So i was surprised at the blanket approach of sending out letters to all 14-year-olds.
Anyone had a similar (or different) experience?
