Help Me - Fasion Advice For A UK Teen!

Hello!

We’ve just come back to the UK after nine years in the USA. I have a 15 year old daughter and we are utterly clueless about what brands and fashion choices are “good” or “bad” over here…..of course I know it doesn’t really matter in the larger scheme of things, but I’d like some awareness of it.

So, tell me what brands your teen likes for coats, jeans, shoes, school bags etc….I’d be so grateful for the guidance! It’s a whole new world from the US!

My dds are 16 and 13.

Dd1 is at college. She like pull and bear, urban outfitter (over priced tat in my opinion), H&M, new look and Hollister. Foot wear is various Air Force 1s

Dd2 wears black Nike Air Force 1s to school, they seem to be the shoe of choice of the school allows them. She likes new look, H&M, primark and pull and bear. I think her coat is from new look, abs seems to be very similar in look as most of the other girls in her year. They all walk into school liking a bit like clones! Grin

Obviously different schools abs areas will have different styles and different budgets! Dd1 has a part time job so will buy her own things from more expensive places that I won’t stretch to!

urban outfitters, shein and brandy melville are great for clothes, urban is expensive but very trendy atm, for shoes everyone just wear airforces really and tote bags are great for school or just shopping

Trendiness can be very school/friendship group specific. My 14 year old DD wouldn’t be interested in Urban Outfitters, but apparently Hollister is okay - if it’s heavily reduced in the sales. Otherwise it’s a little chavvy (apologies for the C word). What she and her peers really like is vintage. If they can claim the Levi jacket belonged to their dad when he was a teenager, they have reached the pinnacle of coolness.

I'm surprised that it would be that much different over here than the US. Although I suppose 14- 15 is when you start going your own way - fashion wise ( and by own way I mean the way of your friendship group for probably 90%of young people.)
So, if she's just starting at school maybe she'll need to find her feet a bit first and can get away with a bit of branded sportswear ( Adidas and Vans in this house) mixed up with some of Primarks' finest and some h&m.
I expect it's a daunting prospect for her but don't forget she'll no doubt be considered the interesting, cool girl having lived in the states!
What kind of stuff does she wear at the moment, what is she happiest in? Does she have any hobbies that might influence what she wears etc.
Maybe a trip into town and a stop at an outdoor cafe so you can both do a bit of people watching, see what she likes the look of. Then the usual places to find inspiration - TV/ films, Pinterest, magazines.
Of course, depending on which state you've been residing in she may just want to find the warmest puffa coat of all time! 😁
Good luck to your DD, and welcome back to you and yours!

I think it depends on what her fashion tribe is. What sort of clothes does she like at the moment? We can suggest the UK equivalent.

IncorrigibleTitmouse · 16/09/2021 20:19

@Wishingwell75 It's so different in the US. Definitely 'tribal' as others have said, but even I in my 30s have people ask me where I'm from because I don't 'dress like a local' even though I’ve been living in the US for years.

16 year old DD
Urban outfitters, Pull and Bear, Brandy Melville and Thrift shops

Thanks so much all….it really is very different here and because there’s no uniforms in the US the style can be anything really. The girls are less into make up and more mature dressing styles at her age.

She does like Hollister as a former California girl, that’s funny that it’s chavvy here, it’s definitely not in the US! She also liked H&M, American Eagle, Converse, Pacsun, Vans, Forever 21 etc. We haven’t had a proper winter coat for nine years, no need! 😂

We are definitely people watching but she started school today so that should help. She was shocked at how naughty and rowdy some students were, the also swearing and backchat! 😳😬. It’s a whole new world.
