Constant use of earbuds - okay or not?!

Just checking on how others handle this - teen (14) bought some cheap earbuds and uses them almost constantly throughout the day - I'm worried about the radiation and want to limit his use. Do any of you have this struggle and how do you feel about the safety/health issues?

I’d rather not listen to the musicGrin
Out when talking otherwise fine

Radiation? Why would that be an issue?

I used earbuds constantly from the age of about twelve until I was at university.

It's fine. Not a battle worth fighting.

My DS1 is also 14, and uses his pretty much constantly before and after school, I don't worry about it, if that's what he chooses, they'll be fine, like pp said its not worth the fight over imo Smile

DS listens to audiobooks, DD has hours of playlists of Korean music and studies online, DH loves free jazz and zooms, and I learn languages and listen to my audiobooks and opera.

We are all very happy everybody wears headphones.

I think OP is talking about wireless bluetooth earbuds which emit low frequency radiation.

I found out only recently that you can get an adapter in absence of a headphone jack on new phones, enabling you to use traditional wired headphones.

The Daily Mail thinks everything is dangerous - sorry, but nothing published in there is remotely believable, lol.

My GP told me to stop using ear buds, not because of radiation but because they can lead to impacted ear wax! I've had to have my ears syringed a few times and the last time I got labyrinthitis afterwards. It's not fun.

But why bother taking the risk where there is a perfectly good alternative?

denisethegreat · 14/09/2021 22:20

I thought this was going to be about cotton buds because I'm always telling my teen to stop digging around in her ears

What mechanism do you think there would be for non ionising radiation to cause harm?

Bluetooth runs at 2.4-2.5 GHz.

That's in the radiowave part of the spectrum, and it's not high powered. We don't go round worrying about being hit by visible light, which has a much higher frequency. We also don't worry about being bathed in (much lower frequency) radio waves that allow us to listen to the radio. We also don't worry about having our wi-fi boxes on. So why would anyone need to worry about Bluetooth headphones?

I just really don't know what mechanism they're supposed to have to causing harm.
