English baccalaureate

Our eldest child is starting to think about GCSC choices and the information from school mentions certain subject combinations can constitute getting an English baccalaureate. Most the subjects listed that he would have to take as GCSE are already compulsory at his school but it means taking history or geography… & he wouldn’t be keen to choose to do either of these two subjects! I’d never heard of an English baccalaureate so I’m not sure whether it is worth advising him to consider choosing his least disliked of the these two subjects to get the English baccalaureate or just not worry about getting the English baccalaureate. I’ve read that some universities like applicants to have it and I don’t want to advice him to do something which might restrict uni choices he makes in the future if that is what he wants to do but equally there are other available subjects he would likely enjoy more & potentially better results in. Can anyone advise me on how important getting an English baccalaureate is considered to be? Thanks.

Ebacc is a judgement on the school, not a qualification. It's not important.
