Any experiences of Dianette for acne in your teen DDs?

DD has acne which flared up before and during her period. She has been taking Lymecycline antibiotics which help but she’s still getting these bad outbreaks around her period. Doctor had just recommended the pill Dianette and it sounds like the right thing for her but wondering if anyone has any experience with their DDs. She’s 14 and a half.

Yes I developed an enormous chest and ate everything in sight and put on a lot of weight. It had no effect whatsoever on my skin which continued to break out into huge ugly spots after about 9 months of this. Roacutane was a miracle for me in my twenties. I lost the weight and I finally had good skin. My two sons took it as teenagers 30 years or so later and both of them now have lovely clear skin.

I was prescribed Dianette at 24 due to adult acne. Never had a spot all through my teenage years. I took it for 3 months and it worked brilliantly.

I meant to say my sons took the roacutance, not the dianette. When I took it, it was called Diane and was probably a higher dose.

I started Dianette at 19, it took a few months but after that my acne really cleared up and it's one of the few birth control pills I've tried that doesn't affect my mood. However, it has a higher blood clot risk than most contraceptive pills so make sure you discuss that with the prescriber and know the risks, if you Google around you will find sad stories. After 2 years the nurse prescriber would no longer prescribe it for me and gave me Yasmin instead - actually she said she was surprised I'd been given it for 2 years. Looking back I'm glad she did that, Yasmin isn't as good at dealing with my acne (PCOS so still have it) but I'm less self-conscious now and happy to not have such an increased blood clot risk.

Dinette worked brilliantly for me as a teen.

Dianette worked wonders for me at age 28. But I think it’s associated with DVT so notsuitable long term.

I was on it for years because of period pains. I didn’t have acne per se but it did clear up any odds spots and make my skin amazingly glowing. It was the only pill that didn’t give me any negative side effects. Pp are right that she shouldn’t be on it long term because of associated risks.

careful about the weight gain.

If it’s an oestrogen containing pill make sure she’s completely stopped growing before you start. Our local public adolescent gynae unit won’t put younger teens with menstrual issues on oestrogen containing pills because the high dose oestrogens speed up closure of the growth plates. Which doesn’t mean that lots of doctors don’t or shouldn’t prescribe the pill to children of this age but it’s something to think about.

Most children will only only about 7-8 cm more after their periods start but there’s obviously significant variability with that. DD1 grew 20cm.

*will only grow
