DD nearly 15 - no period yet

DD will be 15 at the beginning of September. She hasn’t had a period yet and until now, hasn’t been that bothered. But now she is feeling a bit behind!

I’m not massively concerned as she has other signs of puberty. She’s also growing in height still (is quite tall). She looks like she should have started, IYKWIM. She’s pretty slim, but not underweight (don’t know her weight as we don’t own scales).

Is it worth a call to GP or will they say wait another year?

I think they wait until 16.

why don't you ask the GP?

flossingthepussycat · 17/08/2021 17:00

Don't worry. It all sounds good. I was a day after sixteen. Im now 52 and they're showing no sign of abating yet. Somebody told me that the later they start, the later they finish? (which sounds pretty unscientific!)

I have a friend who didn’t start her periods until she was 16 then only had a couple by the time she was 18. She had fertility issues later on and although she eventually had kids with fertility help she went through the menopause in her late 30’s. She says she wishes her mum had taken her to the doctor when she was younger to find out what was wrong.

tootingbeclido · 17/08/2021 17:14

I was 16..I had no fertility issues. ....I am sure she will start soon.

IdblowJonSnow · 17/08/2021 17:39

I was nearly 15. No issues.
If she's slim and still growing could be that?
Is she worried?

itsgettingwierd · 17/08/2021 17:40

I was 15. No issues.

Except now I have endo and adenomyosis but I don't think that was anything to do with later puberty!

MrsFin · 17/08/2021 17:42

DDs friend started at 16. She was (still is) very tall and slim).

Emmelina · 17/08/2021 17:50

As long as she is showing signs of puberty (hair, breasts starting to develop, BO etc.) I doubt they’ll be concerned until 16. We hear a lot of 8, 9 year olds starting but 15 is still a very normal age!

Lucky

llmk · 17/08/2021 17:52

I was 15, it's within normal range.

PlanDeRaccordement · 17/08/2021 17:55

There is a lot of variation and family genetics play a role. My eldest DD got her period at 17 other DD got hers at 16. I got mine at 17. My mother at 18.

Ferni · 17/08/2021 18:04

It depends on when you, your siblings and her grandmothers started theirs. If hers is really late by family standards then its a cause for concern. If she isnt engaging in an excessive amount of physical activity and is eating enough and its late by family standards then perhaps go get her checked but 15 isnt late usually. Mine started at 9 but i hit my growth spurt 2 years before they began perhaps your daugher is going through her growth spurt currently?

PiggyPlumPie · 17/08/2021 18:08

My DD was two weeks shy of being 18. The GP started investigating at about 16 and a half.

She had lots of blood tests, ultrasound scans, endocrine levels testing etc.

We had an appointment two days after the started and the consultant had said that there was no issues and it was just one of those things do they were going to discharge us anyway.

It won't hurt to get the ball rolling at the GP.

Nonicknamesforcatapillars · 17/08/2021 20:43

As others have said 15 is still well with in normal range. One of my sisters was 16, which actually was late by family standards, all other women/ girls started aged 11-13. She’s perfectly fine though. No issues as an adult.

You could make a GP appointment if you’re worried, but I don’t think they’d do an awful lot before 16 anyway.

FlatPackFour · 17/08/2021 22:46

Thank you, that all sounds pretty reassuring.

Like I said, all other signs of puberty are there and have been a while now. And she’s still growing in height. Definitely eats enough.

I’ll talk about it again with her - if she’s still bothered I can suggest a call to the GP now. Otherwise will wait another 6m or so.

I was tall and skinny and didnt start until I was 17. My younger sister started years before me when she was just 11, which was early in those days and she had no idea what was happening as dm was waiting for school to tell her 🤦🏻‍♀️

If she is otherwise healthly I wouldnt worry just yet.

tearsforfears72 · 17/08/2021 23:48

I would wait another six months or so, it only becomes a cause of concern if she gets to sixteen with no period
