Summer holidays-What have you got planned?

My teens are 19, 18 and 16. I’m struggling for things to do to keep them/me and DH sane over the holidays. So far we have brought a large paddling pool for the garden, this was a hit and the kids spent most of the day in it yesterday. We are also planning a trip to Bournemouth and pottery painting. I’m from Midlands and would love to hear your plans and suggestions.

19, 18 and 16? Is that a typo?

Howshouldibehave · 19/07/2021 10:05

My teens are a similar age and would think I was mad if I took them pottery painting in Bournemouth!

They are working, seeing friends, shopping, watching films, reading, going to the beach/park/woods and we are taking the youngest on holiday.

My youngest is 17. He will be spending the summer either working, down the gym or out with his girlfriend or mates.

We get on great but other than occasionally seeing grandparents he would hate it if I organised things for him to do.

Are they interested in history? If so, how about a day at the Black Country Living Museum. They would probably also enjoy Alton Towers.

Other ideas for teens: Go Ape, Crazy Golf, a trip to the local lido, a day hiking along part of Offa's Dyke, bike rides.

Lots of large country houses (National Trust etc) are running drive-in cinema this summer. See if there's something like that where you are - your teens might enjoy a touch of Americana.

well, if you must entertain 2 adults and a 16yo and do family activities...

why not do something like high ropes or raft building etc?

BarefootHippieChick · 19/07/2021 10:27

Mine are 14 and 17 and will be pretty much entertaining themselves. They'll hang out with friends, shopping, cinema and sleep a lot. An awful lot. I will take them out for a couple of shopping and lunch trips, coffee and cake when they require, and maybe a National Trust property if they ask, but that's it. Teens are perfectly capable of making their own plans and entertainment.

@BigSandyBalls2015 it’s not a typo, the 18 year old is my SS.

@Howshouldibehave Lol, I just reread my message: the 16yo persuaded the other 2 to do the pottery painting. The pottery painting isn’t in Bournemouth. The Bournemouth trip is to visit the beach.

I get what you are all saying about kids wanting to do there own thing. I have a couple of weeks of annual leave booked and wanted to plan family things for us to do together 😊

DS15 - two one week UK holidays one with relatives including cousins that he likes and one where a friend is joining us.

Other than that mostly giving him lifts to play football with his friends as both DH and I are working.

GoWalkabout · 19/07/2021 10:34

Dd15 has been camping for a week with friends, dd17 will be working a lot, we have a family holiday in North Yorkshire and we are going away for a weekend without them.

mumofblueeyes · 19/07/2021 10:39

Crumbs. I take my hat off to you OP. I can barely get my nearly 16 year old out of bed let alone playing in a paddling pool and pottery painting.

StepladderToHeaven · 19/07/2021 11:19

My teens are younger, but I've got a couple of things planned to keep them active - sailing, aqua splash, high ropes. We'll probably do a family day at a theme park. Also they play cricket outside school, which helpfully carries on through August.

We'll also have a rota for cooking - in term time I don't make them help as I'd rather they prioritised their homework and music practice, but in the holidays everyone takes their turn.
