How often did your teen 'lose' a brace block?

As in fell off and dangled on the wire?

DS has had his brace for 8 weeks and one block came loose the day before his tightening appointment. The orthodontist was not happy.
I thought I'd been pretty careful but he realised he'd been eating breadsticks a lot.

I'd like to get him to the next appointment without an incident but wondered how common loose blocks were over the course of treatment?

It was only 5 years ago I had mine as a teen. I probably lost 7 or 8 over 2 years of treatment. One pinged off as I walked out of the office. It’s inevitable

DrWankincense · 13/07/2021 19:24

Never in just over 18 months.
But I think from talking to a few others we are the exception.

MaMelon · 13/07/2021 19:25

Once so far - he’s only had the brace for about 3 months. It appears he ‘might’ have been eating a chewy sweet Hmm

Haybo26 · 13/07/2021 19:26

Son has never lost one...yet... 2.5 years on.

Foobydoo · 13/07/2021 19:27

Dd nearly every time. Firstly she had twin block braces that she kept snapping then train tracks that she kept snapping or losing a block. The dental technicians were quite stern about it and kept threatening to stop treatment. The orthodontist just said it happens with some patients.

Palavah · 13/07/2021 19:27

Never in 18 months

Snooks1971 · 13/07/2021 19:30

DS1 now 16 never did… DS2 now 15 yes about 3 times one or another came loose. Finally realised it was chewy sweets that his friend bought him at the shop after school. He doesn’t eat sweets now!

Thank you all that's really useful.

I just cut his fishfingers up with scissors Blush.

In 3 years, DD broke her brace only once - she had started crunching ice (which we think was caused by iron deficiency) and we didn't think.

Never had to cut up fish fingers with scissors.

Ifeelmuchlessfat · 17/07/2021 14:30

Never in 1.5yrs

DecayedStrumpet · 17/07/2021 14:31

Yes DD loses them all the time, the orthodontist gets cross.
One fell off in the car on the way back from the appointment last time... pretty sure that wasn't her fault

Silkiecats · 17/07/2021 14:33

Twice so far, started in October or so

WithASpider · 17/07/2021 14:47

Dd2 has lost 4 in 8 months. Her orthodontist now spends extra time making sure they're attached!

Dd1 lost 2 in 10 months.

grey12 · 17/07/2021 15:20

1 that I remember in 2.5 years

scrappydappydoo · 17/07/2021 15:29

Yes - 1 month in and just at the beginning of the first lockdown - orthodontist was shut for 6 months so dd was a bit uncomfortable

Hellocatshome · 17/07/2021 15:36

Never in 18 months

Saisong · 17/07/2021 15:38

None at all - almost exactly 2 years. They come off on the 4th August. She can't wait.

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 17/07/2021 15:44

DD is 16 and has had a fixed brace for just over a year and has never lost one, nor has she ever needed or wanted any help at all with anything brace related, aside from being there for the fitting and providing soft food that day, being a taxi driver to pick her up from appointments and paying the bills. I've never had to even think about what she can and can't eat or do, she's completely on the ball... I see a similar post about another 16 year old daughter... wonder if there's a theme here with which teens don't lose brace blocks... Grin

Unfortunately her youngest brother seems to have faster dental development and is already at the point of needing to start orthodontic treatment, over three years younger than DD was and ahead of the brother in between them in age - I don't see the hands off approach working quite as well with a ten year old son as it did with daughter who was nearly 14 at the start of treatment sadly ...

KittyMcKitty · 17/07/2021 15:46

2 children, both for around 2,years, never lost one.

KateTheEighth · 17/07/2021 15:53

None in 2 years

Is it the way they have been fitted perhaps?

My ds ate completely normally throughout the whole time he had braces.

Chilldonaldchill · 17/07/2021 16:09

Once in two years for one child. (Crunching ice)
Never in 20 months for other child.

Sadless · 17/07/2021 16:31

Dd has had hers since last September and she has eaten a few now.

Sal

Benjispruce5 · 24/07/2021 19:39

Two DDs, none lost over 2-3 years!
