What do you feed visiting teenagers?!?

I seem to have a steady steam of friends of the teenage dcs visiting on Fridays after school (and various times at weekends) which is great. But I am wondering what everyone feeds such visitors?! The dcs tell me that fishfingers and chips are a 'no no' , that frozen pizzas don't taste good, however it is getting too much to order Dominos pizzas in 2-3 times a week now. As a family we usually eat very late so it's not an option to have the usual family meal. Any ideas of simple stuff that I can have in the house for whenever it is needed?

Massive pasta salad with tuna and mayo and grated carrot

Grilled cheese

Biscuits

Peanut butter sandwiches

Hot dogs

Cheap and filling is the way

Susannahmoody · 02/07/2021 18:56

Oh, and if they are thirsty we have glasses and taps.

Brilliant!

AKA corporation pop

Massive pasta salad with tuna and mayo and grated carrot

Not sure most teens would want that

NoSquirrels · 02/07/2021 19:00

Are they there for an invited meal, or is it just snacks?

Snacks - give them access to frozen pizza, instant noodles, toast, cheese etc

Meals - eat what the family is having.

If the issue is they’re expecting dinner at their dinner time not fitting in with your family’s meal times then see Snacks or Go Home. Grin

Cheese Toastie maker!

LynetteScavo · 02/07/2021 19:05

This is so difficult! I'm
On my third term and the Papa John's are getting far too regular!

Chicken fajitas go down well- the girlfriends who refused to eat food could be forced to eat vegetable soup. The rugby playing older teens are copious amounts of salmon and broccoli with cous cous (I always found that a weird one)

Doritos, Doritos, more Doritos.

Stir fry (from
Sainsbury's- (just get a packet of egg noodles, a packed of veg and a packet of sauce) -they cook it themselves and it seems to go well. If they're lucky they can have spring rolls to go with it.

Always keep Ben and Gerrys in the freezer- buy it on special offer.

Packets of Mexican rice, and avacados go well with the fajitas and Doritos, Doritos, Doritos.

Anything you can make in a massive wok. Ramen, Jjajangmyun, japchae, bulgogi, chow mein, drunken noodles, pad Thai.

IHaveBrilloHair · 02/07/2021 19:29

Who is making the massive wok dishes/pasta salads?

Oh that's a big favourite with my children! There's nearly always a Tupperware box of it made up in the fridge Grin
SirenSays · 02/07/2021 19:32

Anyone who wants to, they really aren't difficult. Just keep a tub in the fridge of things they're allowed to cook with so they don't go using up your best steaks.

IHaveBrilloHair · 02/07/2021 19:34

Aye sure!

bugaboo218 · 02/07/2021 19:38

If my teen has friends over then they snack on fruit from the fruit bowl, toast with various toppings, pot noodles or cheap frozen pizza.

Should a friend be staying for dinner then they will be offered a portion of whatever we are having for dinner.

If teen DD or her friends turned their noses up on what was being offered then tough. The friend's would not be welcome in my house again and they would have to use their own money and find an alternative venue to eat in.

Stop being a mug and pandering to your teenager's friends 'op. You are not their personal chef.

The rule is in my house they also clean the kitchen, load dish washer and /or wash up if they are making snacks. My place is not a hotel.

Hell no, nor the wok food either.

My DD would happily eat either & enjoy it, but when her friends are over, they want carb laden crap & nothing else will do. If I served that to her & friends, I'd probably be accused of abuse Grin

olivethegreat · 02/07/2021 19:42

This is a brilliant thread. I've just added pesto garlic bread and a jar of Tom sauce to my next shop to keep around in case of a sudden influx as dd is just starting to spend more time with her friends (luckily we live furthest from the school but I'm sure at some point they will descend !) corner shop will do nachos etc.
Feel very organised now!

CurryLover55 · 02/07/2021 19:44

The Co op fill your freezer offers are really good!

Imapotato · 02/07/2021 19:48

Aldi do some very nice take away style pizzas for about £3. Everyone seems to love them. I’d go for something like that. Or Asda make your own ones. Better than frozen. Cheaper than dominoes.

StevieNix · 02/07/2021 19:58

The big Chicago town frozen pizzas are much more like takeaway pizzas than other frozen ones.
Other than that agree with pasta and jars of sauce that they can make themselves, or a toastie machine for cheese toasties (again let them make them!)

Maggiesfarm · 02/07/2021 20:04

Nice sausages and cheesy mash, onion gravy, baked beans or peas - or both. Yum. I fancy that now.

TawnyPippit · 02/07/2021 21:26

Quesadillas are good. Wraps keep well in the freezer, we always have plenty of cheese, then chuck in a bit of whatever else - say, tinned sweet corn, jalapeños etc. Look and taste nicer than toasties, but are basically that. It works well with cheese and pizza sauce as well.

MsFogi · 02/07/2021 22:39

Thanks for all the suggestions - Dominos will be a thing of the past!

They buy their own takeaway.
Occasionally will put on frozen pizzas.
I’ll supply snacks like crisps/drink
If it’s one friend they can eat with us - doesn’t really happen now though as there’s usually a few in garden!

JustDanceAddict · 05/07/2021 17:52

Oh and often ds will make him and friends scrambled eggs!

HelenHywater · 05/07/2021 18:08

I don't buy any food for teenagers! Any that visit me are 16-18 and there are huge gangs of them that come and congregate in the garden. I have occasionally made a large pan of chilli for them. But they'd rather steal the vodka.

If one of either of my dds' friends come round during the day, they just help themselves to whatever's in the house

wordsareveryunnecessary · 06/07/2021 16:15

Chicken breast, Yorkshire puddings, vegetables, gravy. Or maybe lasagne with garlic bread and rice. Food to fill them up.

Benjispruce5 · 24/07/2021 19:52

They don’t one here! Stop feeding them! Grin
