Are any of your teens into boxing?

My 12 and 14 year old sons have just started going to boxing. It seems good training for fitness but I’m a bit worried about them really getting into it in terms of injuries. Anyone else’s kids go to boxing, how do they get on?

I had a boyfriend who boxed from about 12 onwards and he was very good at it...he was 23 when I met him.....but he got his nose broken so many times that his nasal passages didn't work properly. And he lost a lot of feeling around his nose so he used to have snot there which he didn't feel ...I'd have to tell him.

He also used to get bad headaches. I would not encourage it at all.

I would not allow my children to be involved with boxing. It's barbaric and dangerous.

Hellocatshome · 09/06/2021 23:24

Children's boxing is not so bad as they wear headguards but once they get to the age that they dont wear them I wouldn't like my sons to do it.

Boxing is absolutely brilliant for fitness, my son started to do boxing a few years ago. however he was 10 and we did not let him spar.

It was all regulated and there was a doctor who did medicals however I was not comfortable with him fighting another child and the risk of being injured.

I also felt he was getting pushed into/ pressurised into sparing and the club he went to was quite competitive so he quickly stopped going which is such a shame as it was as good for his fitness

To be fair, that's the point of boxing clubs. You can find places which just offer the training though which I agree is excellent.

These boxing clubs do indeed pressure lads to fight. Especially once they hit 13 or so.

My 12 year old wants to go as he’s been attacked at school a couple of times recently and said he wants to defend himself. My worry is he’s autistic and might not know when to use any boxing skills appropriately. He’s tiny and couldn’t fight his way out of a wet paper bag. I’m going to encourage something like Karate instead I think.

MothersPridePlain · 11/06/2021 08:23

Personally I am also against boxing as a sport but I appreciate it has been life changing in a positive way for a lot of young people.

Hellocatshome · 11/06/2021 11:02

@MothersPridePlain karate is a very good sport but my son is a black belt and still couldn't fight his way out of a wet paper bag. The techniques they learn are not very relevant to an actual fight/scrap. Maybe ju jitsu or similar would be better for him.

I can recommend taekwondo. They do a lot of self defence in the classes. They are even show how to escape being tied up etc.

I agree.

So many other sports they could be encouraged to do. I wouldn’t allow my dc to box.

Boxing taught right is an excellent sport. I've done it too.

My 16 year old DD does mixed martial arts . She enjoys kick boxing and sparring ( with head guard and shield )
It's also Ju-jitsu .
She doesn't fight (yet) but has defended herself from someone who was giving her a hard time in school by deflecting slaps taking them to the ground and walking away showing self control . I saw it on cctv and I was proud
That confidence to use something outside of a gym is what I think is beneficial

Dentistlakes · 29/05/2024 10:39

I’m a member of a boxing club and although my kids don’t box, I know plenty who do. It really depends on the club and how seriously they want to take it, but my club doesn’t force kids into sparring unless they want to. It’s brilliant for fitness and a sense of community. I’ve never seen any kids get injured, although I suppose it must happen occasionally, but I don’t think it’s particularly more dangerous than rugby unless you’re going to compete. I’d let them try it and see how they get on.

My dd2 has a private boxing lesson weekly and has done for 2 years and it has literally changed her life in terms of curing her dyspraxia on so many levels.
She doesn't do mixed classes or fight but does it for coordination and health as her main sports are football and then Brazilian juijitsu once a week too.

I personally compete at Brazilian juijitsu, train 10 hours a week there and gym, it is excellent for health and fitness but does have a risk of injury but fights are stopped before this in comps

All fights will end up on the floor so grappling is great but 1 punch can kill and does so often so boxing is also good
