Just wondering how best to set out a CV for DD who has just left school and is wanting to apply for part time jobs. It's going to be rather sparse as her work experience was cancelled due to lockdown, so I was wondering if anyone has had their son/daughter write a CV recently and if so, what did they include and how was it set out please?

One page of A4 maximum.
School history, exam results if any.
List experience of unpaid work and school achievements.
DS did some gardening / fence painting etc for family and put that down. He was a prefect and mentor to younger child. Sports teams.
A short paragraph about reliability and punctuality.
Two references - a neighbour or teacher.

I’m thinking about the same thing.
Hobbies might be helpful, also household competence: can they cook/ clean at home?

I usually my cv with
Contact details.
Profile: bit about what sort of work looking for and availability
Qualifications: list GCSEs and say results pending or put predicted grade (if you have it, we don’t)
Experience: anything useful they have done
Hobbies and interests: to demonstrate commitment and teamworking, performing under pressure etc.

Thank you, yes that's helpful. It's just tricky when there's so little to include.

We set out a couple of stints of volunteering and some projects DS had worked on as "jobs". It was clear they weren't, but we used that format.

I actually quite enjoyed doing this with both my DC. Their academic performance was nothing to shout about, but they are more rounded people and have more experience than I realised. Once we got started we actually had quite a bit to include.

Does your dd have hobbies elaborate on them
Eg my dd does Drama so I said she gained great confidence in drama working as part of a team and individually.

Dds included her GCSES, sporting achievements, volunteering and DofE.

My 17 year old dd has just got her first waitressing job at a large hotel. She had very limited experience on her CV, but we set it out so she had her personal profile at the top, then qualifications, work experience and hobbies.

We looked on FB jobs and Indeed for part-time vacancies. She secured two interviews one in a shop and the hotel she is now working for.

I would definitely recommend sending in a personalised cover letter, in addition to a CV when applying for jobs For the hotel, she described how her skills were transferable from school work, e.g using her own initiative and working to deadlines. To ensure it didn’t come across as a generic letter she was just sending out to any potential employer, she included the address of the hotel at the top of the letter and said why she wanted to work in this particular hotel. She also stressed her flexibility and availability to work different shifts. Good luck!

I used to work in a place that attracted younger applicants and saw lots of CVs. Our business was centred around a specific hobby (videogames) and I was always surprised when CVs just listed "playing videogames" under hobbies. I always liked the CVs where they mentioned their favourite games and why, or why they think games are important etc. It showed me that they would have something to say when chatting to the customers.
